Welcome to Oh, brother, podcast three brothers

trying to figure it all out

with your hosts, Brandon, Coleman and Eric. On this week's show, get the random button.

Hello. Hello, sir.

Hello

Brandon

things

all the things there you go.

I had that moment a mirror 10 minutes ago Pisco of, oh, the new dog we're sitting can fit through my gate bars

back. Oh

Brandon

that's not a good realization. Discover

no especially because it was as I looking as I looked over she was

was as you were watching him run out the gate, as she put her head

through the gate and was like she there was that brief pause of like, oh, look what I can do. It wasn't like, Oh,

Brandon

I caught her by her back right leg. That's good. Don't go running down the street now. I know what happens when you do that. I know. Well as your other ankle. I have to lunge

over. Oh my gosh, it

was it like between the

Brandon

like the space that's between the gate door like the door part and the post or was like do you have like bars on your gate? I have bars. Okay. Yep, in between the bars. Okay. I didn't know if it was like between the you know, where the, we think about it like a door and a doorframe how there's that space. I don't know if it was that part or if it was like the actual gate just was no,

the gate itself surprised how many dogs we have sad

that can fit through our gate.

A shocking number and this one was not the

Brandon

I'm with a chicken wire. Huh? I didn't go to the farm center.

No, I Oh, I already have some I'm ready for this.

Brandon

Oh, there you go. Why do you follow question? Why do you already have chicken wire?

Because we've already sent out some

tiny freaking dogs. Okay? Like a rat terrier It was like yo,

I told naked when that dog came over I was like, don't even let him outside I will be back.

Brandon

It'll just be God. Don't even God. Right? So

I don't leave it up all the time. I put it up only for the dogs that I know can get through.

Brandon

Ah, okay, it's not terminated permanently, because it just,

it looks so tacky.

Brandon

But you don't one of those things that like, you know, if you looked for it,

you'd have to, you'd have to look for it to really notice it but I

just don't

Brandon

like a homeowner's association, right. They're not gonna come and like find You know, we don't have any it'll be fine to see. And then if you do, you can be like, excuse me. As soon as somebody does something about this giant hole in my yard, then

you know, what are my deathtrap

Brandon

sidewalk then? Please, they will talk about the chicken wire in the gate. All right. Yeah, hold it. ransom. Yes.

So I'm going to enjoy an adult beverage after that scare. Hold on just a minute. Here. Don't blame Yeah. Ah.

Brandon

Had a dog go home today. whose owner dropped her off two nights ago. It was like she's a four month old lab. I'm really sorry. She's no. She's like she's a whole. I get it.

In as she's talking.

She's handing us six packs of beer.

Yeah, she's like, I'm really sorry about this. I hope you're okay with this and she hands me some blue moon. She handed me this IPA. She gets Megan some cakepops from Starbucks.

Oh,

yeah. Wow. I mean, Bing to watch the dog.

It was really, she was really sweet. And she was like, just she was like, break her spirit.

rend Wow.

Wow. And I was like, I was like, What? Like, it's a four month old puppy. It's a puppy. And, and it's one of the things of

their reason their their dog we had sat before.

Brandon

She was an

ancient, ancient ancient lab, so they had not had a puppy in a long time. Yeah. Gotcha. They're used to a dog that barely moved

during a day and now they had a lab puppy. And lab puppies are very active. Yes, and not small. So this

dog probably the most well behaved dog we're going to have in our house for the next month.

Brandon

So just a perspective thing, not necessarily that 100%

was a perspective thing. She was like, we don't give her any leeway. She doesn't get on any carpet in the house. She's locked away, you know, like, not in a mean way, but in there like, we've had it with her antics, whatever. That's like, sibyls mom right there. What the heck was crazy. I was like,

okay, that's cool.

And like, we'd let her we let the dog roam around our house like a free rein, like we do every other dog. And I think we also helped I think what else helped too is that we had three other dogs here.

Brandon

There was, too There was a little bit showing up right there a little bit more pack mentality and structure, General Coby, just hanging out, being like, yo,

do what he does. He does. It's amazing, because he's a 12 year old dachshund who didn't do anything from anybody. It doesn't matter what dog it is. He puts him in their place and we're like Go do it. So that was

Brandon

it, Cody. What's the real secret to petsitting? Kobe, Kobe. Kobe one actually doing the work. You heard it here, folks. It's not calling him making

him food right? Hey, go he keeps he keeps everybody else in line. And he did in this dog was like

was the first little while was like really into him and he would just you know

blap blap if it was really funny this

puppy

like he's he gets in that dominating stance of like a puppy roll on its back and he's like standing over it

Brandon

was like, like glaring at it.

Stop it now.

Brandon

And you know what? Once he once he did that,

not a single problem between those two. She was like, Okay, I'm gonna stay over here and you're the boss.

Brandon

That's Yeah. Was curry again. Oh, yeah. So yeah, he's doing well. Wow, that's great. So, I like that we've uncovered the secret.

Kobe is the one doing all the work. I'm the number of times we get a hyper puppy in here. And cobis

just like boom, boom, boom.

And then within a day the dogs like, okay, like a little bit more like okay, I'll just, mom just be a little more calm. I'll just, you know, hang out.

Brandon

Thank you come to go. It's real. He's role modeling. He's like, No, no, no, that's wrong.

really seriously, like,

Collin

that's one of the benefits of having a Coby having another dog or a couple dogs in the house when you bring in a brand new client. Because you as the as the pet sitter don't have to teach the routine don't have to treat teach the manners because the other dogs will do that for you. They will model that and the puppies, the other dogs even adult dogs will pick up on

Brandon

what we're doing and how it's going to get done. Yeah. And I believe a I've seen was that was like was the guy's name? Oh yeah, that's the old with Cesar Milan dog, boy. Uh huh. He used to do that, right when there was like Superman because that Susan like you saw that show. It's on. It's awesome. that dude's crazy. But like he would do that he was just like taking back home and he would just like, watch the other dogs in his little things like no stop quit for and then they quit they'd line up and shipshape at no time. Hot Cesar Milan, extremely, extremely

controversial figure in the pet sitting and dog training community. I've heard that I tried to like him

You do not you do not as entertaining as heck

it

is. It is. And there's a lot to learn from him. You know I was there's a guy that we follow.

Miguel Rodriguez, he does city dog pack in New York City. And he's a dog trainer dog walker. And he, he's one of the things he talks about is just learning from everybody and anything you know, just Just so you know, what Cesar, Cesar Milan was somebody that he talks about frequently, and he showed this clip of Cesar Millan trying to break this dog of food aggression. Which, if you've ever dealt with a dog that is any larger than a medium sized dachshund with food aggression, and you say, No, you know, it is it is one of the most terrifying moments of your life. And he was out he was like, This dog went for him and he was like, batting at it with his hand on its face. And he was like all getting up in there. And this dog just latched onto his hand and wouldn't let go. And Cesar Milan had been in this business long enough that he just kept his composure and was just like laid into this dog. It didn't the ad it showed that it fazed him and you know, His hands are bleeding. like crazy,

Brandon

and you're just like, what am I watching? Right? Because yeah when he does that you're like what's happening right now? You're doing like it gets like all fours and like shows he's like facing they're like well that's an interesting tactic. okay whatever it is very interesting it's strange to watch right but I have heard that people don't like that a lot of people are upset about some of his strategies right like oh, you should never do this or that and you know he's not like a mean he's not like beating the dog or anything like that. So you know, it's just his his

style is not necessarily something that someone can learn by going in class know or something like it is very Cesar Milan.

Brandon

Yeah, on exact style, right. Yeah. So yeah, that'd be that's kind of why people Call them on the show, right? Like No Other people can't do that. Because it's like a weird, varied, required skill set over the course of many, many, many years. Mm hmm.

But it's so hilarious to watch intelligence.

It is.

What's uh, you guys have any dogs running through your gates?

Brandon

No, our neighbor lady lets her dog out randomly. And he runs about in the street in the yard. And she's like mega old. Right? And so she just kind of opens the door and sits on the porch and runs outside. Sometimes he's on the big line, like a lead thing and she just like, quits her chair through the loop and sits on it and he kind of runs around in the yard answer That's what he does a lot of times, but sometimes he just like opens the door and like we go outside to walk, walk Chuck and there is in our yard like what are you doing over here? This is? Yeah.

See at least Nice.

Brandon

Yeah, he's very nice. He's just like a very small. He's very loud. Like, little boy. But yeah, guy so like you pet him and stuff but he's always like, he's like very excitable. So he's he'll be very barky like we go away but he's very small so you're like, whatever that's about it. We don't have a gate. And if we do open the door Chuck sometimes goes outside, but it's very slowly and it's not far. Yeah. And he's just like, Oh Okay, I'm done now he'll turn around.

He's not he's not bolting for the door.

No. You know

Brandon

why he'll wander outside. He'll just like wander to the yard. Sure, it'd be like, that's far enough. That's, that'll do. Yeah. He's like, okay, I've gone to the bathroom. Let's go. Alright.

That's it. Oh.

Brandon

Because again, not fast. He's very old boy. So he's so sweet. Unless it's summertime, and then he walks much more briskly on his way back. He's like,

let's go

Brandon

looby he still do do a bit of scampering still. And like when we go outside, he will very quickly trot. Sometimes like, Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, easy.

But, yeah. So

that's the day that is hot. He was like, going back inside. See you later.

Brandon

Officially, summer now, we've had heat advisories for best two days. Yeah. It's a million degrees. that's already been added until like, literally yesterday. Right? When I went outside I was like,

Oh, no. What is this? Gross,

but that's kind of how it wasn't in Alabama. Like it was just like that. That muggy, wet humidity and I'm like, Okay, this actually, you know, tolerable and then I get back to Oklahoma. Now, the moment we step out of the airport, like why is it 90? Why do I feel every temperature of it like this is miserable? Yes. And then I've been hiding ever inside ever since.

Brandon

Yes, this is the right answer, because it's too hot. It was a little stormy here earlier today. Like it was thundery

is an oh my god he did. I went on a few cases today. And I get to a house and I was like, Oh, it's actually kind of sunny and then like, 30 minutes later, I'm leaving and it's just like a downpour.

Brandon

Like, I'm gonna have a whole bunch of rain here in this one. So I think south of us It rained a lot more. It like sprinkled a bit and rained a little bit this afternoon. Yeah, but earlier, he was very lightly about No, seven before seven maybe. So got that out of the system. For now. We're still under a flood warning. Because there might be some more pop up storms and it hasn't rained in quite a while. So if it does rain, it will be like black. We had our friend we had our thunderstorms A while back or a couple days ago. back two days ago. We're just the heavens opened. We've got like an inch and a half short amount of time. here and again. I think south of us It rained more. I'm not sure. I heard I've been doing deals this week. Someone's goes over now. sitting at home time again. Hiding from the heat until you guys gonna go to the Missouri State Fair this year. No, I know I don't believe I will. They still having it? Oh yeah. Oh cool. It

is it is on now. Now, if you go through the list of like things that are canceled,

Brandon

it is it is

tentative in like, no grandstand events and no concerts. And no the butter cow is cancelled this year, guys. Okay, wait.

So what?

Brandon

A great grandstand events. No, no, no, no after that. Butter, the butter cow What the heck is a butter cow? Is it a cow made of butter? Yeah, he's a really. Yes,

Blitz. It's like It's like a life sized cow made Oh butter.

Brandon

Why?

It's a state fair.

I don't know.

Oh my gosh, what the heck?

Brandon

Must be a picture of this. I don't know. I don't want to. Yeah. Well, they always have the State Fair in July. How is that not just like a big tub of melted butter? Like how is that?

possible?

Brandon

Imagine if you will.

This butter was shaped as a cow. Congratulations. This is

cool, right?

formerly butter cow.

Butter cow. Like Like a post a snowman or something?

Brandon

Yes, like he'll be back again one day right into

color in the belly.

Oh my gosh.

Brandon

Yeah, so it must have been some magic in that old cowbell. They found

Yes.

Brandon

Yay. Oh

yeah, I know lots of

lots of things are canceled.

Brandon

Lots of different activities.

Like even portions of the livestock show are cancelled. So you're the rabbit show has been cancelled. Oh darn. The four h robotics has been the horseshoe pitching contest the pedal pole. The

floor cultural department, turtles native to Missouri educational display has been canceled.

Brandon

Now, lots of things are not going to be there.

Yeah,

including the grandstand events, which means no racing, no artists coming in to do live performances. I've noticed truck and tractor pole racing.

Oh man. Yeah.

Brandon

Okay, well, fine. Yeah, no, I told Megan. I was like,

that is definitely the two and a half week period. We are going as a family back into lockdown. We are not like we are not leaving our house

at all.

Brandon

I mean, the rest of the states going back into lockdown because they're idiots. Right, homie Mikey once again. Yo. I don't know what's the problem? It's not my fault is happening. Sounds familiar? Thanks, buddy. Appreciate ya. So we'll see what yeah, I can't believe they're still having that. I mean, I can because it was already in there like

when we cancel it.

Yeah.

Brandon

Sounds like Oklahoma and Missouri are best friends right now. Are you good old Understand he is well, I believe that this is a good opportunity to Oh, we need to wear masks. Oh darn. Even Texas said that today, the governor of Texas was like, hey, actually, just kidding. Maybe this mask things is not too bad.

Yeah, so we'll see.

What's Uh, what's mask wearing, like round where you guys are.

Brandon

So my town actually, they didn't do like a an order. But basically, they came out with a statement that said we would kindly appreciate if everyone would pretty please wear a mask. Please, please, please, please, please go. So yeah, I read you this. We are asking for everyone to volunteer. comply with this request for the benefit of the community and the health and safety of all residents and visitors. So I can get behind that. I appreciate that. They are doing something doing that. So a lot of people around a lot more people around here are again, I'm not really going out anywhere anymore. But a lot of the restaurants are like scaling back again, just because we've had a bunch of cases down here now. And stuff some of the restaurants have closed down because some of their staff have gotten sick. So the factories have to they've been shut down for a week or so. So let's see.

Yeah, the poor Taco Bell here in town. I think it's intermittently closed like three or four times because people there, keep getting

Oh, no.

Brandon

So yeah, it's a weird Advil because you know so now making its way to rural Missouri, right? That's Yeah, display a progression through Yeah. It's in, in kind of where I'm at, you know, does the State finally came out and and made it, you know, mandatory to wear masks whenever you go out and see people for investigations like they're just now saying, Oh, we should do this

no, it's you know, people here and they're wearing masks. I don't know, I can't I don't know if there's a statement that the city of bartlesville

Brandon

said, but you know, you're still walking around Walmart or something. People aren't wearing masks, but it was so weird. Like being down in Alabama, or like, maybe one every out of every, like 50 was wearing a mask. And you know, we we wore a mask like everywhere but it's like no is this y'all not know what's going on? Is there that Okay, all right. So are they they're having a divorce right now the whole southern part of the United States is new. Yeah, sadness. But it was just a very different dynamic of world. There's some people here and there's like no one down there wearing it, but I wore my mask for a good four hours straight today.

And so it was very, you know, you know, me being whiny. It's like, This hurts my face. This hurts. Why am I wearing it? My face is hard when it but then I just remember like, Oh, well, I find a nursing friend. That's like I wear this like 12 hours. Yeah, right. And I was like, taking mine off and on when I was in the car and like my faces were like, Oh, well. I mean, I used to not complaining. It's I mean, I got I got my little masks all over the place so I got backups, the backups and all that stuff on I have copious amounts of hand sanitizer so I'm fine but it was just very much like oh the state is you know now you know finally demanding that field workers were stuff like when this was before this all happened when they had the teleworkers in us the US quote unquote buddies working from home the the field worker is then the only limited number had to wear like the certain mass and like this this this but then you know things died down like well you don't have to wear this and you know you can wear whatever you want to then you don't have to wear it and then like last week, I think it was last week they're like, Oh, yeah, wear it because there's a whole county that was like infected or whatever so probably should do should wear the bathroom is like Ooh, yeah, okay, probably should wear the mask. Yeah, but like, I mean Didn't go out in the investigation before. And so I didn't have to ask because I wasn't on field. But even before they told me, I was like, I'm just gonna

Brandon

wear this just Yeah.

Because now they're asking, you know, for whenever talked about like demographics,

Brandon

you know, they know, ask as it goes, anyone impacted by COVID. And now I have several that are like, well, I don't know. And they're like, well, you don't know what you're getting into. So I'm gonna wear a mask just in case. So yeah, I think it's a good plan. This, you know, it's it's really not hard. That's the thing that kind of confused me the very most, like, it's not difficult thing to do. Right? Yeah. Like, is it mildly inconveniencing yourself? I mean, yeah, it's I mean, it's not like, wonderful, but think of it as a new exciting fashion accessory. Think of all the cool things I want to get one that's just like Batman. That's what I want to wear. I want you they have some guy no Get some of those, or just have because I think that's a you know, good or something like that. There it's, well it's one of those things of going like, you have to at least acknowledge it.

Because if you if you try and get something to the hides or blends in, I can't like more of the on the nose masks that are like, this is a mask,

right? Or like, I don't like wearing this, but here I

am having to admit that, like, it's not fun for a lot of people. But let's be real, as you said, it's not hard. It's one of the easiest things we can do besides wash your hands and just saying like people

Brandon

don't come on. So yeah, there's this guy on one of our flights coming back from Alabama. And like, you know, pretty packed packed plane, like everyone was wearing this mask, but like this guy, like walked up late or, you know, walked on board late, not wearing a mask. And you know, one of the things that the flights do and I was like, Well, you know, if you don't have a mass, you will not be Usually, you know permitted on and you won't be able to, you know, fly later and this guy sits down and the stewardess comes up. It's like, Well, sir, do you have a mask? Like, oh no, I'm not gonna wear one. And then she's like, and walked away. I was like, No, take him off. Make him go away. But he was like, he was several rows in front of me, but still is just like, the audacity of himself. Oh, not gonna wear one. It's like, dude, yeah, and it's an hour flight. Come on. Like, it's not gonna, you know, like, that's all you have to do. Like your beards not going to,

you know, be hurt by it. Let's just put your mask on and just

Brandon

know, I will say, I will say the beard does make it very difficult. Right? It's a weird it's a weird beard mask combo. very awkward. So,

you know, yeah.

Brandon

It's not impossible. Alright. It's fine. It's okay. And also because Haven't been, it's a little bit worse because I've been at home for so long. I haven't really bothered to like trim my beard at all. So it's kind of like insane right now. It's like man, whatever. So that's not helped at all, but it's

it's fine, though.

Brandon

Because I just have that little you know, chin thing for some reasons. I can't grow a beard. It's fine. I'm not upset that I can't grow a beard so I just want to grow beard, but it was like this is really itchy. It's like my little stubble is just so matted why but I'll out Yes. Again little it's a little like an hour. I'm fine. Yeah, so yes.

But no, it just flabbergasted me this guy. Just like look at this girl try to do her jobs. I go, I'm not gonna wear one. I don't believe in it like,

Brandon

man. I mean, come on. It's not really a question of belief. That's the thing that really confused me the very most. Right? Is that I don't want like you don't believe in germ theory. Is that what you're telling me right now? Yes. Is that? Is that what's happening? Like, I don't want to go on down this huge rabbit hole cuz I know we have other things to talk about tonight. But that's a big, long, big long thing. Right? Like, like we'll just say that there's a large number of people that say things like, I don't believe in this or I don't believe in germs. During this whole thing, states are continuing to cut education funding. So the number of people that will be able to believe in that is currently going down, which will stop there, but like, I don't like doesn't matter if you believe in it. Like, it's still

well, like, like, yeah,

Brandon

my, one of my axioms for life, basically, is just because you don't believe it. doesn't mean it's not true. Right? belief and truth are not synonymous. Right? And there's many levels of philosophically that you can argue this point. And you know, that's fine. And that's very interesting discussions. But belief and truth are not the same thing. So you can say, I don't believe in germs. They don't care. They still believe in you. Right?

All right. And I've seen the memes that go around of like, they drew a picture of people who are in like, the full hazmat suits in the research lab, like this is what researchers use when they are working with a virus, but don't worry, your your mass that that your neighbor made, you will be just fine. And so their logic being like, Look, it's not as effective as that stuff. So, quote, unquote, why even bother? And then they say well, If it's not 100% effective, I don't want to wear it at all. Well, that's a very silly

Brandon

thing, right?

Yeah, because you go, okay, even if it's not 100% effective, if you start going,

you know, if you decrease your chances by what, you know, washing your hands frequently by 20%, and your social distancing, so there's another 20% and you're wearing a mask, which is another 20%, like, cumulative things. Right, that continue to cut into it. It's not like the only silver bullet is to stay home and not touch anything or go anywhere.

Brandon

Sure. Yeah. I'm trying my best.

Really Bandu Challenge accepted.

Yeah,

but for people who are trying to do other things in the world, like if you choose to go out

Brandon

and don't want to catch it, these three things will cut your chances significantly human like you can write, and I don't I don't understand that. Like the other bigger You may write is like it's my freedom. Your opinion, you're interfering with my personal freedom, like Sure. Okay, cool. It's not about you though. That's the part that is we're failing here. It's not about you necessarily. This is the same argument. However, this is not a new argument. Right in the 60s. This is the exact same marketing people made against wearing seatbelts in the car. You can't make me it's my choice. like, Dude, it's it's not kill you and other people. Like, that's the like that's, we just want to like I know it's very like strict constitutional readings are like oh my gosh, oh, you can't doesn't say in the Constitution. I You make me wear a mask. But yeah. Again, it's not about you. This goes back to our be kind rewind Episode right Whoa, like

throwback?

Brandon

Yeah, not about it's not about just you. It's about other people and doing things for other people. Right rewinding your video, right? Uh, you know, we see more TV commercials promoting this. I remember I was reading a thing of the day. It was like hey, it was like this meme and said hey, you remember this and it showed this plastic soda rings. It's like show me a 90s kid who won't take scissors this immediately be the right person on this mass thing. Right

well the things that will stick the in your in the psyche. For those of you interested you can go to Ober other podcast comm to view all of our past episodes and read transcripts from our shows which are almost indecipherable but they're kind of funny in

what they are. But the but be kind rewind was from back. Are we back at this all

disempowers years ago in the fall?

Right, and heads when it came out was when that show came out?

Wow.

Like, yeah, we talked about that in,

in thing, you know, right. Yeah.

Brandon

Just being helpful to the community. Being a part of a community means you have to do things that make the community better.

It's called civics. We have a word for this.

Yeah, called civics.

Brandon

But nobody wants to talk about that. Well, it's now actually in the news, it's called socialism. But, um, it's called hiding your community a better place by being a part of it right. And not, is worrying about the well being of others. You know what I mean, like, right, that's that humanist utopia. That Isaac Asimov and myself dream about, you know?

Oh gosh

Brandon

I like asmof right Leave me alone

not his haircut, but you know it's okay who I was really worried that was yeah that was that was it the sidebars Oh man. I'm so good. Oh

yum get your mouth close.

Brandon

So speaking of very bizarre things, I believe that means it's time to transition into today's official topic. Yes. No Okay, anyway, yes,

offline offline, we decided on our challenge this week was to press the random button on Crunchyroll

Brandon

Yes, now and watch it. So, for those of you who don't know, the reason that we did this, and we talked about this slightly before, is that there's a big, we talk a lot about, like media that we like, you know, cuz it's a thing that we do. Especially now, since we're at home, you know, going through lots of media things. There's a big basically, at least in my world, columns world, Aaron's world too, I think there's a giant black hole in the media landscape that we really don't know where at least I for one don't know really anything about that would be the world of anime or Japanese animation. Right? So we decided to just randomly picking that now it's a very scary place. Because we know nothing about it. It's a huge huge thing right? So I think before we talk about that, do you have any other experience with it in the past at all?

Like, Aaron, Aaron, you can know first? Yeah.

Brandon

So I definitely have either growing up or in college. So growing up, you know, the, you know, the classic of, you know, Toonami on Cartoon Network after school. So like, that's kind of where it started. For me things like Dragonball Z,

Aaron

no reboot Gundam, things like that. And so I got started that and I was just kind of like, you know, the little appetizer and then when I got to college, you know, I guess the more nerdiness of me came out to where I met my really close friends now, who are the like, you know, when I told him He's like, yeah, I've watched animate like it was very, like limited but they're like, No, dude, you need to watch and obey. And can may or may have me into, you know, sitting down and watching, you know, copious notes. About our like my my my good friend Bryce Butler who I love to death every time we'd go to Oh vintage stock you know he would have to try to buy like the little box set of DVDs or VHS of some you know anime show and we would sit and watch it you know for you know at like binge watch it you know for hours or days and then it kind of you know as I kind of got older as I you know kind of you know got a big boy job and lived by myself for a little bit it kind of died down it would pop up here and there me just like watching like whatever. And then I went to Alabama, this last weekend for a vacation slash wedding bobber. It was absolutely beautiful. By the way, no one comments me on how amazing I looked. But now though it's all about the bride whatever. I mean, it's so I was sitting there now completely out of my elements. You know, Shelby is a sorority girl her friends are all like sorority girls. And like and all this stuff and I was like, Well, I don't you know, like you know I was talking to them you know we've had it and then I went over to the the the groom and he's like, look at like anime like oh my gosh and then like his friends you know, like do we love anime and you need to watch this and but they also the kind of people that also read the manga kind of things which I was never really into because the way having to hold the book bugs me. But what a because you read it you don't read it from it's backwards,

Brandon

right? Yeah. And so like that, that to me, like my brain just can't compute. And so, like,

now they're telling me like all these things to read and or watch and they're like, Oh, no, dude, like, look at all this and, you know, so that that kind of you know, reads degraded, I guess

But

Brandon

I have experienced in the anime world I have watched some really cool things. I've watched some really weird things. It's mostly like, Oh, what is this? Oh, that's terrifying never that again. And so like, I've watched some things where I've had to watch like, four or five times just to figure out like, what the heck is going on?

Yeah.

Brandon

And so, like I say, yeah, it's I mean I have experience in it. I'm not I'm not an expert by any means. But I I have a background in it. I have a little thing on my Netflix and Hulu of, you know, anime shows that I that I watch here and there. And so I'll keep up with some stuff. But there's there's a lot of you know, that a lot of things that are popular with a lot of people I was never really into But like I like my kind of things I like branching out here and there so I have experience in it but it's been a while since I watched it but you know re then we started with this like, Oh, we need to watch some anime thing I was like, wow the anime the anime gods have funny so

it was just it was just fun for me because you know just, you know re watching some of the old stuff that I used to watch and you know really looking up what was that one show called and try to Google like show with an animated show with shark person doing this and then like things pop up like Oh, that is not at all what I meant. Oh God I wanted and so yeah, like as I have I have experience with random things with the you know, the popular things and then the one or two shows that are just like completely off the grid. So yeah

Brandon

I don't, I have a lot less experience, right. My experience with Japanese animation basically is Studio Ghibli movies. A large amount of number of those, like most, there's a few I haven't seen, right. But those feature like movies, and also some Dragonball Z. And yeah, Gundam Gundam Wing, right? That's kind of it. Yeah, that's basically it. Not a lot. I have only really ever watched one other one and I because I did this experiment sort of on my own, like several years ago, because I was like, summertime. And I was like, Well, I don't know what to do now. Summer because again, when you work in education, sometimes in July, you're like, Okay, now what? So I did that and I've watched one episode. I could tell you And show and it's called like, do rah rah rah rah or whatever? Oh, usually abbreviated d r r r. It's very odd, but it's pretty good. Right? I watched a couple years ago, I don't really remember exactly. It's about I might go back and watch more. And I watched a few episodes of Sword Art Online because I heard of that one. But after after a few episodes of that, I was like, Okay, I'm more now. During the gimme, that was it, kind of. So that's, that's it. That's all I got. So there's this big. I also have seen at least at some point, I seem to have watched a little tiny bit of Cowboy Bebop. That's, that's important. That's a cornerstone one. But I've heard these names before. Like, I've heard of some of these. Mm hmm. Like the big ones right? But it's hard to know where to just like start start. Yeah. And we'll get back to that in a second. So Colin, if you want so before Colin gets in talking about like the history of things, sorry. Um,

one thing that kind of

Brandon

kind of read jumped back out onto me was the, like, the YouTube stuff with like, Dragonball Z, but the abridged series Oh yeah, I'm the kind of you know, someone takes it and dubs over it make a comical like that kind of Reese like kickstarted some of my reanimated watching though calling Okay.

Oh, well,

we know shocked to hear that. My I started with Dragonball Z and Gundam.

Brandon

Yeah, because you guys

kind of know shocker there and then it really fell off my radar. I think about that. That

Brandon

was kind of do

I've gone back and watch it a cup like not like a couple episodes. It's still it's really good.

Brandon

I watched some three part thing one time again. And and

then I somewhere started.

Brandon

I don't know, Gundam Wing is giant space robots. Oh, yeah, I should really be

Crandon. There's also like Mobile Suit Gundam gun. Yeah, that's

Brandon

Listen, that's it. We'll talk about that in a second. Because that's another confusing thing. Yes.

Right. Right. So So I did that. And then I would every now and then try and jump back in. So I watched like, there's one called Helsing is a series.

And then, when I was getting my, when I was in Lubbock, I tutored a guy who was the president of the anime club,

at

at, at the university. And that kind of re spiked my interest. Just talking with him. And there's like you talking about I don't know where to start, like, the depth to this is just like, just immense and I would just sit and talk to him and he like the breadth and the styles and the the genres that are sub genres within you know, within anime as that broad thing it's just it's mind boggling. And and so I did I have popped

Brandon

in and out of, of Hunter x Hunter

I did watch almost all of bleach. I've watched some of

Matt Naruto you know Attack on Titan some of one piece you know just jumping in, but never really again just like watch this one piece that's

some of one piece because there are like thousands of there

again right back to that again. But

the part of this is I think for me too is not I don't want to say this, but it's gonna come across it to me it's tied closely with like how you and in and and Brandon play Video games like I don't want if I play it, I don't even know if I'm enjoying it. Right? Does that make sense? Like I don't even know if I'm getting all of out of it that I'm supposed to. And so it's I always have that nagging in the back of my mind of, is there more than I'm missing here? Are there references I'm not getting Am I doing this in its fullest context

Brandon

that I can most certainly references that you're missing, but like, a lot of storytelling is pretty, you know, good. And I mean, not, not all of it. But I think as long as the storytelling is, is interesting, I think that's the I think that's the most important part. As long as you're getting bad out of it, as long as you're just like, Oh, this is kind of fun. I mean, it's kinda like, when you watch other things, too, I know, I've watched other shows where I don't get the reference or I missed something, right. Yeah. But so yeah, yeah, that is concerning. Because, yeah, getting back to the landscape is terrifyingly enormous. Right. So if you're a person who's like, Oh, yeah, I might want to check it out. We, what? How? You know what I mean? Like, how do you actually unless you do find a person that already watches it, but like you kind of alluded to, sometimes talking to that person is a little also overwhelming because you're like, I don't understand the words that you're saying. not helpful at all. Not even, not even a little bit. So it's, yeah, it's very weird because, I mean, there are some definite benefits to animation that are just kind of fun because literally, there's no limits on what the show could be about. Right? You don't have to worry about like special effects budgets and all this craziness. You draw it right, boom done. So like whatever you can come up with. There it is about do it right. That's why in like, my neighbor, totoro, there's a cat bus. Like what? Why is why

I did just watch that too. I

Brandon

don't want to I kinda want as an experiment to have Susan watch that and see what happened.

Quick flash forward to we'll pause on this as a challenge does need to be at some point watching all of those those those shows anyway, I don't have access

Brandon

to all of

you. You may be related to somebody who does. Oh, yeah,

Brandon

I forget about that thing. Okay, yeah, we'll talk about one thing one thing. Yeah, the thing with the stuff, alright. But yeah, so that the fact that like, there's a lot of like, really rich history in Japanese animation. Yes. Right. Because it's like, I was reading a little bit today. It basically started in like the early 1900s. Right. Animation kind of caught steam in in Japan, just like it did around the world in the US and France and Germany. started experimenting with animation as an early form of movies. Right? And then kind of like, after Snow White in the Seven Dwarves came out in the US. People in Japan saw that man. Oh, snap, okay. And then they kind of like went off in this direction with they realized animation can be a big thing. Mm hmm. And it started gaining popularity. Little by little until like the 60s, I guess, really ramped up and then the 80s and like, would bananas, right? Like, boom, explosion everywhere. And so it's movies and also television shows just like this whole TV shows. Boom, and it's not like I think a lot of this. The weird part that people out on the outside get is that in the United States, a lot of times you associate your very strong association with animation with children's material. Mm hmm. Right. In Japan that that does not exist. As far as I can tell from some of the subject matter, somebody shows and I'm always talking about like the weird stuff like that some of its really heavy, is like emotionally emotional drama and really deep, like philosophical stuff is in some of these things. There's also some really crazy adult oriented storytelling. It's, you know, that's the stereotypical internet meme anime that you hear about that you might be like turned off by a lot of people think oh, it's kid stuff or it's like gross. You know, because they see that like, meme anime, which is like girls with like, giant body parts and like all these weird stuff like manga So, but there's there is a lot more it's there's lots of very subtle things and there's kind of like an anime for literally everything. Right, like, talk about all kinds of material. There is some for kids. There's some for young adults. There's some for adults. There's all this subject matter and it's very, it's very scary place to try to go into because once again, we watched all these on Crunchyroll hashtag not sponsored, by the way yet. Yes Crunchyroll I know you do that. So if you're listening, what's up? We went on there because if they have a free thing, and I like free things, my favorite again teacher so I love free stuff. But you can just watch stuff. So there you can look at the popular anime selection. So those are ones that you've heard before. These are your one pieces, your Naruto Your Dragon Ball. I have a big list there. Those are intimidating though because the episode count on some of those things is enormous. Mm hmm. Like it's terrifyingly large. Yeah. And also the way that they're sort of broken up into like, I don't fully understand that Like, they'll be like a whole huge series of something. And then they'll like, like I don't know what the difference between like Naruto and Naruto Shipton those are two separate things apparently. I don't know what that means but lots of other series do that too so they'll be like this one huge series and then there's like another one it's like the same first name colon something else and then another huge episode list like with

hundreds of episodes written in draw, there's something

Brandon

I saw so kinds of 800 was like what? So automatically I'm not watching that because it's too

much. And I will say I will say about a year ago on that there was I was on randomly Crunchyroll scrolling and there was one that just came out. It was called demon Slayer in hell yeah episode and had one episode and I was like, I'm watching this. I am going to commit to watching this.

Brandon

Yeah, because also Crunchyroll does new like Mondays or something like they released them like the day after they premiere in Japan. Japan. Great, great, awesome new one.

Yeah, so it was like, it was like, I don't know anything about this. And I was like sitting there going, Okay, do I start chunking away at that Naruto? Or do I or do that but this one thing popped up? Let me see it ended up being 26 episodes. And I didn't watch it all in sequence or like, you know, week after week after week, right? Because I just had to catch up. But I did that for that very reason of like I, if I'm interested in this. So what I'm hearing and what's kind of interesting from all this is that each of us has been very interested in dabbling in portions of this over time, right? We keep trying to dip our toe in. So yeah, this This allowed us to do, as you were saying, like, hit that random button and just jump

Brandon

to something. Yeah, right. That's why we picked this too, because Crunchyroll literally has a button at the top of the screen, that it looks like a dice, and it says random. And what it will do, we'll just give you the first step. Episode of some series. Anything on their website, it's just like, hey, go, here's the first one, boom, start there. It's kind of, it's kind of fun to just like, okay, what's gonna happen here? What is this gonna be? is gonna be cool. Is this gonna be awful? Luckily, most of these are like, not very long episodes aren't super long, at least one it was not long. We'll talk about that too in my review, but like, you know, oh, and the website, they have them organized by categories, your drama, romance, action, love, fantasy, whatever. So you can check it out. If you've heard of one like, it's another one. Food Wars. That's one you could hear of more than what's the other one that I hear about all the time? My Hero Academia. That's one. I've heard of this. Never seen it, but I've heard of it. So like you You've heard of that and you're like, I don't know what that is. You can just go there, and it's there somewhere. You can find it. Like I did with Sword Art Online and watch some of them were like, Okay, this isn't really going anywhere now, but maybe you'll like it better. No.

So, with that any other preamble before we move into reviews?

Brandon

I don't think so. Okay, um, I will go ahead and state. I did not have access to Crunchyroll when this started, so, I just found random things on Hulu and Netflix. That's fine. Um, but then I also got bored with some of the stuff I watched, and just watched some things that I haven't watched in a long time. I know a little bit of the cheating side, especially since Crunchyroll is free. It's just a website that you can sign up for the premium service. Oh, that was

like, it would never give me access to that.

Brandon

It just be like, pay

you have, you know this amount of the month or this amount a month or this amount a month like I never buy. It gave me the 14 day free trial, but it would never let me go past until I put my credit card stuff in. So like, we do

that on your phone to the app.

Brandon

Yeah, I did it on my laptop and on my phone. But I didn't have an app. I just went to your website. Yeah, I just want to

calm it hit a button. And it was like here, you're playing. You get commercials,

Brandon

TV commercials, which I will say one small preamble, I forgot about this part. Because my internet is notoriously janky. Sometimes Crunchyroll will play all of your commercials that like the maximum resolution possible. Right? It's like 10 ADP, and my computer is like Whoa, whoa, whoa, what are you doing with that stock? So it didn't like that. But other than that, it works fine. Just ditches my internet days the problem. Yeah, it's a free website. You can like, create an account login that just allows you to like save episodes. It's all free. You just get commercials got premium service, the premium services like no commercials, plus, I think you can simulcast when new episodes are released in Japan, you can like watch them live air like live premiere. Yes. Other than that, you have to like wait a week or something. Okay, which is fine. Oh, no, whatever will I do? In fact, yeah. Okay. Gotcha. There's like you just like data if you want to dabble. This is the best place that I know, that has like the biggest library where you're dabbling to huge selection. So anyway, so I don't know who wants to go first. I don't care. I don't know for sure. First, this was I don't we didn't watch the same one. It's gonna be really embarrassing. We didn't talk about Before So, mine

I don't even know how to describe this because I title

Okay, it's called eyeshield 21 The man with the lightspeed legs

Brandon

Okay, we definitely did not watch this. Okay, so

what I did was I saw what I was gonna watch and I committed to watching the entire episode before I went and looked up any more information about this. Okay, I have I have my notes that I can

Brandon

talk about,

but basically the original animation series, but I know ran for 145 episodes

for back in like early 2000s. Now, okay, here.

Here are my notes from this first episode. I've

seen and again, I apologize I deeply apologize for my white Midwestern waving pronouncing these names. So just

deal with it.

Um, Siena as the main character, he gets into the high school that he wanted so he can be with his childhood friend memori Ah, he, what is he? She tells him to make your own friends this time. He got to figure out where he's gonna fit in. So it's this coming of age kind of story.

Brandon

Okay, very popular. I do have the high school setting. Yeah.

With might I add people drawn in such a way that

I don't know what adults look like because they, they're drawn.

They're all fully

Brandon

anyway. Again, that is another trope You seem to be either like 15 or 80. Yeah, it's kind of

nothing in

Brandon

between. Anyway, that's how you know a person over the age of 30 is they look 100 and we're like, oh, okay, that's

in Siena. Looks kind of childish. And everyone else around him looks very adult looks very grown up very sharp angles and much more more rounded features he's not, he's not large, he's small, he's slender. All the guys around him are very big muscular jawline kind of thing. He gets picked on by three upperclassmen who take him into the football closet to get beaten up. At which point, man who I don't, they never said his name, but he played a very significant role in this. He, his eyes go glow on fire, and he hugs the three guys in like, throws them over his shoulder and then becomes very concerned that he hurt them. And then he goes in and he's very excited that Siena is there to sign up for the football team. He is heartbroken when Siena says, No, I'm not here to sign for the football team. He goes on to tell about the football team. He's never heard of football. He wants to know more about it. And the one thing that this unnamed man is very interested in doing is getting making it to the Christmas bowl. They've never made it Because the football team sucks, seeing the volunteers to be the manager so he can help them out. Anyway, he goes home on his way home these three guys from early before find him on a bridge and threatened to beat him up. They take his cell phone Oh no, because that's where the phone number is for him. One of his only friends memori is in the phone. And they're like, ooh, a chicks number. Let's take the information. Sita gets really angry and fights back, grabs the phone and runs away. And he runs into a big crowd.

And

Brandon

at this point,

a character who I didn't know was supposed to be paying attention to shows up eating like an eye or something. And he sees seen a run into this crowd and seen as panicking hiruma we know was on the football team because he was showed earlier walking around with pads and a helmet and stuff. He sees Siena trying to hide and run and being chased by these guys. He sees hiruma grit his teeth and determination to run away and engages lightspeed runny thing that I don't think he knows that he has yet and very easy. Bob's and weaves his way through the crowd. And hiruma is like calling a game like,

Brandon

nice weave and the stuff and he's like go for it and seen as just running, running running.

Another guys are chasing him. He's dodging, he's ducking. He's twisting, you know, all these football moves.

And he dives into the train and makes it safe. harima hunts him down and like, weirdly, like, ties him up, it puts it puts a gag in his mouth and then like, threatens him to join the football team. And then they they don't want anybody else to steal him. So they give him the only helmet with the Ico that he's number 21 so it's I feel 21 and he plays high school football,

Brandon

and he has fast legs. Okay. It's really hysterical.

The whole time. I was just like, and what Yeah, what?

Brandon

Yeah,

so that's, uh, yeah, that's that was all my notes. That's pretty much exactly what happened there.

Brandon

All right. Did you look up any additional information to bat any background stuff after you watched it? Well, yeah, and basically

you're just hold on on to those. It makes it

it makes is one of the

it's just a constant battle from then on for the next hundred 45 things. It's like playing more high school football and gathering more and more advanced teams, which have people with more and more advanced powers, right. Right. So like, people, other people are also as fast or faster than he is and so and people are strong. So like, and I will say in the opening cut. I have seen this once before, where the silhouette where they take the plight of the people standing there and they make them silhouettes, but they leave their eyes glowing. Oh yeah. Zombies They that's what they did to the to the opposing team so made them like these weird like monster villains were trying to attack him and he's like

Brandon

ducking and diving and dodging and dodging kind of thing. It was Yeah. So it's this it's this

monster power fighting thing played out on a football field with the with the high school drama

backdrop.

Brandon

It's fantastic. All right.

I was I was so

again, but it's like okay, like

Brandon

one of the purposes of the shows. Is that you?

Like a lot of that backstory gets filled in. Throughout.

Yeah, right after the run,

right? Yeah. I didn't expect to know everything or have everything laid out because I just had to like, Oh, what is

Brandon

going on? that's a that's a common thing is it doesn't take forever for storylines to kind of wrap around and you'd be like, Oh, yeah, okay, okay, this makes sense on episode 67 right whatever. Yeah. Oh my goodness. That's great. So well, I will go next because mine is disturbingly similar. Oh no. Mine is called slam dunk. Wow, okay. You ready for this first episode called? Birth of a basketball genius. Question mark at the end. I don't really know what this says. There are 101 episodes approximately 20 minutes in length. Right. So you can there this I did look up the date. This this anime is based on a manga like a bunch of damar this anime is from the glorious year of 1993 random From 93 to 96 Oh, why? Oh yeah. So basically, I watched the first three episodes because they were like a little mini arc. Right? Because the first episode like just stops, you're like, What the heck? Alright, so I watched the first three episodes, so I might get some of this wrong. I'll try my best to the first one. But basically, kid this kid in mind his name is sakuragi han han han amici I believe it might be the other way around. I can never remember which order these names going onomichi sakuragi that yes, that must be right because they call him secondary cocoon. So that would be his last name. I think his first name is Han ameche is a troubled youth coming from middle school into his first year of high school. Okay. Again, high school setting. He his problem though, seems to be that you He's like this monstrous dude. Right? He's kind of the opposite of, like, all his friends are drawn is kind of like, young age looking, or whatever. And he's like a chiseled warrior mountain dude, right? Like muscley. He's like 10,000 feet tall. It looks like Not really. He says in the show somewhere. He's like six foot three or something. He's like this big, muscley athletic looking guy. But in the middle school, he he has the record of being rejected by the girls the most, at over 50 times. Girls don't like him. He has a reputation of being he's very hot headed, and he like fights all the time. So he's kind of like a bad guy. Right? He's like a misunderstood miscreant youth. Right? Kind of like a tough guy that nobody really likes. So he's getting his fresh start in high school. And he's all like, I don't know. There's lots of like, overdramatic and he does that weird thing where like the animation style change in like a certain scene because he's trying to portray something funny, right? Mm hmm. Is that a bunch of times, but like, he's just just wants a girlfriend, right? So he meets this girl. And she's like, Oh my gosh, you're so tall. And he's like, why? Yes, I am. How's it going? He's like, do you play basketball? And he's like,

sure. He

Brandon

does not know as well. By the way. He is not an athletic boy in the slightest. So he like, this girl like loves basketball. Like, loves it. Right? So basically, she says, like, oh, athletic guy. I wrote this down on my notes in quotes. Athletic diet guys are so cool. Right? So she thinks that he is cute because he looks athletic. And she likes athletes and basketball. So he's all like, yeah, course course I yeah, that's right. So they go to the gym and he says Like show off and he like goes to dunk. She like tells him about a slam dunk. She's like, it's literally the coolest thing ever. Only the coolest people can slam dunk. And he tries it until he watches it. Like smacks his head on the board, like fall down. And she's like, but still she's impressed. She's like, Oh my gosh, she jumped so high. That was so great. You just do it next time. All this stuff goes on. And basically that's kind of the first episode right there. The rest of the day, the first three episodes is at least it's only 20 minutes. It's very, like, blah. They draw a lot of this stuff out. And he almost getting a fight with some older boys. That's what he showed. That's how he shows his hotheadedness. Right. He's all like, I'll beat you up on all this stuff. There's also like, it turns out that she has a crush though, on this other boy that used to go to her middle school, who plays basketball. She thought he was the greatest but she's like too afraid to talk to him. Right. So they have a confrontation with some of these older upperclassmen, like third years or something I don't remember. And so they also go to a roof to have a fight.

Oh my gosh.

Brandon

On the school roof to have a brawl, and then they meet this other guy who's actually her crush. His name is rucola Oh, the girl's name is Roku Akagi. Right. So Roku, they, she, she likes to call a crush on him from middle school. So they go to the roof to fight these dudes. But the bullies go out there first and Ricardo is up there like napping on the roof. And they like try to beat him up. And he's like, go away. Me alone. He's also an enormous person.

Like,

Brandon

though he beats up the bullies already. And then when he gets up there, he sees that and they start fighting. Right? But then this girl freaks out because she This guy that she likes is like beating up on this other guy that she like. It's very, very weird to have this thing that she yells at him. He doesn't He's, uh, you know, I heard you were bad. And I thought they were wrong, but it's all true. You're terrible person and go away, you know? And then she's like over Kawa. Are you okay? And he's like, Who are you leave me alone. She's rejected by this other guy that she likes. She's all she runs off this whole thing. Right. And then in the third episode, he like, ends up. He's coming down from upstairs. And these kids like, accidentally hit him with a basketball. And he's like, I hate basketball. Got it that goes all that crazy like throws the ball and like beat these kids up. turns out they're on the basketball team and the captain comes behind him and just like, punches him in the head. Oh my gosh. So basically him in the Captain get into this altercation and they decide to settle it, but not with the fight with them basketball showdown of captains mad because basketball is his life. And onomichi has disrespected basketball. And so he's gonna pay by being embarrassed in the gym. Because he's playing back crazy on him right? Playing basket because the captain is like the best player. Right? But it comes out through some random backstory through some side characters that the captain's life is basketball. He loves basketball so much, but they made it to the they've never won any championships because the rest of the team is so not good. Right? It eludes them that championship eludes them, because now he can't do it alone. And the rest of the team is bad. So they like lost in the tournament last year, whatever.

And so the

Brandon

subject Hamptons goal is to try to find people to join the basketball team this year to do and he wants to recruit ricola because he was really good at middle school, right? So he's gonna teach how to mici lesson. And it's always like, it's basically a a, right? Well, you first, like, I'm gonna see if you if I can, if you can steal the ball from me and score once before I score 10 points, you'll win. One of those like very one sided things. And then actually, it all goes down to like the last one who ever left side note, it turns out that the basketball team captain, he's all ragging on him. He's actually haruko, his older brother, the girl that he likes. She's actually told her brother about him, and he has potential to be a good basketball player. So he's like, trying to teach him a lesson slash test him to see if he could be on the basketball team. This ultimate it's like a side thing. So there you go. That's the first couple episodes. Very briefly of slam dunk. They go if you were like a ball, and it turns out however, um, slam dunk is actually an important historical anime in Japan. I googled it after I watched these episodes. Turns out, it was actually super important in making basketball a popular thing in Japan. Before the manga and anime basketball wasn't really a thing at all. Ah, it may help to make it really popular. Um, yeah, it's what it's I wrote down it's one of the most popular manga series in history selling 120 1 million copies just in Japan. Oh, dang. And there, I don't know if there still is. They actually received an award or like their contributions to Japanese basketball. And there is a slam dunk scholarship that will let students go to the United States to play basketball at a major university.

Insane so there Yeah,

that's really cool. God I read all that after is like, Wait, what?

Brandon

So it's kind of a random sports anime, which Collin also wants her to be funny. Yeah.

Well, it's interesting that you mentioned that yours helped elevate basketball because that was actually I feel the one I watch.

That was a little blurb but they had to have like this was part of a movement to help increase popularity of American football

in Yeah, it's crazy.

Yeah, and people say they would actually say online. of of They they liked when they were playing football scenes, but people would start giving it negative scores with the fewer football scenes that they had.

Brandon

I think in this one, I think he goes on to join the basketball team. And then I don't know if it's about like, just they're trying to not hate each other because right now they don't really like each other very much. Friday, just like trials and tribulations of being a high school and being on the basketball team and trying to win. I don't really know. Maybe I'll watch some more. I'm not sure. But

it's definitely

Brandon

pretty interesting.

Yeah, just

how many how many themes are wrapped up in now?

Brandon

Yeah, there's a lot. There's a lot. So it's pretty interesting. There's like, already just in three episodes. There appears to be like seven storylines. What the heck is going on? I don't know. Lots of stuff out there just with a brief overview for anybody watching some lamb and Dawn has a really like a lot of enemies has a banging opening song. It's so so rockin like Yeah, yeah. Wow. So I

kind of read the read those words and going,

how does this relate to the show? I guess I'll find out later. Okay.

Yeah, the title of yours. Oh my gosh. Well, I like

Brandon

Oh, you're very concise and nice and succinct. But yeah, yeah. So to me. So junior high school enemies

to hiring reports and amaze football. Did you watch a band? Did you watch a baseball anime by any chance? Did you know but I got to the basketball thing that you know, I do know that the enemies like that were helped sponsor and that's why you baseball's so vague in Japan and became super popular just because a lot of the the manga and anime series so I so the first thing I want to talk about, I went on Crunchyroll and I got the little app thingy and I just hit random. didn't watch it. But now I kind of want to um, so the anime that picked on random is called drop pick on my devil.

Brandon

What's also known as Justin Chan

de Rue de Roo poo Kiku

is technically a comedy has 15 volumes in the manga series back in 2012 and has 11 episodes in the the anime. The plot, if you are interested is a Japanese human, which name uden

had

hanazono summons the serpent woman jasin or joshing, which is evil guy From Hell, unable to go back to hell by herself, Justin spins each day unsuccessfully trying to kill urine while simultaneously spending time with her and various acquaintances from heaven and hell. Alright.

Brandon

Uh, yes, it just sounds like one of those like, really like over the top shows. Um, I'm looking at the cover art for one of the manga and, and I'm just like, Ah, that looks interesting. I'm scared. But I kind of want to watch now I definitely want to watch the first episode to be like, what what did I just click on?

So that'll be what I'll be doing right after this. Okay.

Brandon

Which one did you watch

it for manga wise for Crunchyroll. So the one that I watched, I just went back to

Brandon

so one my safe bets was to rewatch Attack on Titan. One of the toys I started on Season Two just to kind of re you know, get my dip my toes in the water

because I remember kind of what happens in season one, but the problem is, is that there's so many random characters, I can't remember all their names and I should have taken notes but this is kind of what happens with me when I ever watch shows like this is that I just sit there and just watch it and just like enjoy the craziness the go is that a tiger Oh, he killed that died. Oh, now he's died. But this is also one of the shows that I watched from the attack on titan the bridge, which some YouTubers went back and they dubbed over it and they made it a lot more comical. And the only one I can tell you is that there's a girl that that's nicknamed in the bridge so and then the TV series or the anime series called potato girl, because the first time you meet her She's literally like eating a potato just because she's hungry. So,

Brandon

name Sam wise. No. I mean,

that's that's kind of the one that I

Brandon

like I started what

it was last night or the kind of this week I was sitting there watching them. And I was like, you know, three episodes in I was like, I was not paying attention to anything that just transpired like I know where they are like what they're doing and why they're doing it but I was like,

Brandon

What's his name?

But I know like the main three like the main two characters or three characters, but like they're they're doing this season that season two, they have a lot of the you know, other characters that kind of meet later, but there's just like so many characters that are just like, you know, kind of doing their own thing like kind of like a game of thrones as when they have like their own chapters and stuff. Yeah.

Brandon

But I wrote a list down of all the ones that I watched episode or watched when I was like younger, but that was the one I just kind of just clicked on. Just as like, Let's watch it. Let's just go from here. Let's do it. So Attack on Titan and then yeah, this drop kick on my devil. Yeah. And it now piqued my interest. So yeah, we'll see we'll see what happens with that now I am perplexed to What does inspire. So we shall see. There we go. Yeah.

Yeah.

Brandon

And a secondary thing to follow up here. This is the other controversial thing about anime Did you watch your anime in English or in Japanese? Ah, this is very divisive topic, so we should probably address that as well. So for me, there are some times where could put on the subtitles and just still enjoy it. But I think when I was just with this just of just trying to like get back into it, I just put it on the dub. And so it's it's kind of there's two things with it sometimes because it kind of depends on the show for me, like Dragon Ball Dragon Ball Z like I go watch it on both One Punch Man. Um, the voices are very distinct and different. But I kind of like this. The the dubbed version, because it kind of fits the character a little bit better with is just kind of what are you doing? Oh, hey, but it uh, um, but there's some shows. I'm just like ads. If it plays a plays, I'm not like, well, I can't I can't watch subtitles, because it's just interesting to listen to, but I can sit and listen to whatever. Okay, do you have one that you prefer in general or does it really just not matter? It's just however you're feeling at that moment. So that Definitely for One Punch Man definitely in in dubs because I just like the the voice actor for I just completely forgot his name

but I mean if you want to be submerged into it you know definitely subtitles but One Punch Man is the one where I'm kind of like and I guess I'll also Dragonball Z just because that's what I like I grew up with like you know and then I listened to some of the characters that you know with the voice actors in Japanese just like but but that's not how it sounds because that's not how I listened to him

Brandon

growing I was true because if you hear I guess if you see it the first time one way than the other way that you kind of associate with it and you want to watch it the rest of the time especially with Dragon Ball cuz we did was on a cartoon network or whatever so it was it was the devil English Yeah. So with but I think I watched One Punch Man first in subtitles and so that's why I was I just kind of like accumulating that like oh that's what this is okay, um so but but that's another one I can just like you know it's whatever but definitely when I went back to attack on titan because I also did some work while I was watching it just to get like myself read back into it I definitely put that one on dub so I can so I can just sit back and I don't have to focus on the TV I can okay okay background kind of yeah so yeah but I mean other than that like I can pretty much

it doesn't really bother me I know some diehard animate people that like you have to listen to it it subtitles how it was originally intended. I'm just like, man like I don't know just put on the TV. Oh, watch it Dang. So that you know things like that with me. It doesn't really bother me. But I know there's a lot of people that are just like you know staunch defenders of the original version or or there's people that are like die like they're not so much in the the anime itself that there's a lot of people that are like you know supportive of the voice actor

Brandon

that's true to answer that that's another like big one but I mean for me I was like add put it on the TV I'll watch it I'll like it whatever I there there is a big thing with people who you know prefer the manga over the the show.

Well, one show that one of these people down in Alabama Tell me about is a show called berserk. If you want to be really do wrestle, Boy,

Brandon

that's tough.

If you want Yeah, if you want to be like really depressed and like, you know, it was like it's a good, good series, a good depressed it's

a good depression. depressed

people will say like, No, I will not watch the TV series. It doesn't do it justice manga series is the way to go. But then there's people are like putting like the mini series because I don't have to read anything. So, I mean, there's no I don't imagine our comment section is going to blow up over this. I mean, I enjoy the anime, because like I said the mangas some of them just are just weird to me like, my, my brains not configured that way. So it's just like, but like I know and I've talked with people and I have had friends who get into like, just like heated debates over, you know manga versus anime dubs versus now subtitled I'm just like, just put it on the screen I'll watch it I don't care if it's good I'll be you know in translating but if not, I'm like, Is there anything else to watch though?

Okay, that's it.

I will say that I am subs

all the way. Okay. I end I think That is partly because

Brandon

of my experience with Studio Ghibli films. And just the vast difference in I don't say vast,

but in the differences that do exist it come across in translation or in stylistically or in nuances as they try and say, Oh, this show is going to be going to an American audience. So we will use maybe these kind of connotations or these kind of

examples to get our point across

those that's very different than

one of the things I'll say as far as an example of this is watch pals Moving Castle with the subs on I think about the relationship between Sophie and how, and then watch it again with the with the dubs and think about what kind of relationship they're supposed to have. It's it's different, right? It comes across with different context, I think so. I have always enjoyed the subs.

And I yeah.

Brandon

Okay. I also generally I just like I usually will watch the subtitle version. My reasoning is mostly just because I think Japanese sounds very cool to listen to. Right? It's just so different and I like how it sounds especially the like that stereotypical, like, deep male voice acting Japanese voice Yes. Yeah, pretty satisfying. Like I don't know why I was really good. So I usually watch it that way. I don't like I think with a Ghibli movie like what the movies sometimes I will watch the dub just because it's longer. And I'm not always like looking at this screen. I don't feel like it by like. So I watched I've seen them both ways. So I don't really know if I have a preference really, I just I like the shows in the sub title in the Japanese just because, again, they're usually short debate and I think I think part of it is that originality like this was the This was how it was made. And so that that part of it is intriguing to me and you can just kind of like, like it that way. Again, I again, I think just the sound of the Japanese language is very fun to listen to. You know. And so I think it's just, that's part of the experience for me is just listening to that and hearing it that way. I don't have like a real important Like fancy reason, but I just think it's it's cool sounding. And I like listening to that. And it just makes it interesting. Right? Plus again it goes. Sometimes it does go better with the actual just animation the inflection that they use with how it's animated and stuff that way. He was usually pretty good. So I yeah, I generally will watch the subtitled version as well. Right, right. Okay.

There we go. Cool.

Brandon

Yeah, I never like kind of, you know, the way people talk to people sound, the different kind of dynamic that people have. And that's kind of another thing with some of the other shows that I listened to or watch that are Like, you know, if there's what was I know what I watched a video and it talked about

the, you know, things that were shown in the ANA in the the, like original Japanese version compared to the things that are like word was shown in the American version. And you know, you watch some of that and there's like, oh, like, I mean that that scene looks really cool I can we didn't get that. And so, yeah, it's like oh like well, well that's been you know, did this or like oh that this sentence makes completely no makes the show, you know, more understandable and so, you know, seeing the things that we see compared to what is originally shown, you know, is you know, censored or you know, just changed or last year because sometimes they even even when you use a slightly different word, you know, it kind of changes context and certain things.

Brandon

So, like, I know that, especially, sometimes if you've seen something both ways before, you'll notice that sometimes The words are a little bit different. And you go, oh, okay, well, that's interesting. Why did they choose that? And, you know, even it's not even though it's a different word from this, what's written in the subtitle, from what's spoken in the English dialogue can be Yeah. So it's like, oh, that's, that's interesting. So that's this is the thing that's different, right? sometimes can be it's like a weird just random thing. And again, you only knows that if you watch something, like twice basically in but yeah. So it can't be weird, though. Especially if you like once a lot of it. I've heard that so. Yeah. So final question, I guess, are you going to be watching more of either what you watched or just something else, you can hit the random button again.

I will be

I'll be I will not be watching more of eyeshield 21 the main with lightspeed legs

as shocking as that may be, I am very shocked by this Yeah, no, I think I I will be hitting it again. And this has again spurred me into

Brandon

trying to

get into more of the shows that are on my list already you know, there's some of the more big the big popular ones.

So yeah, trying to

Brandon

grab the other problems I don't really have a list right cuz some of the big popular ones there's a couple that are like big and popular but they don't really pique my interest. So like trying to find something else to watch is daunting, but like yeah, I'm, I will definitely be with this with with this thing that I picked because I'm, well now I have to see what happens. But, you know, I'll definitely you know, continue to watch you No Attack on Titan things like that. Because you know, I watched it for a reason. But yeah that those are those are definitely the shows that I'll be like well I mean I'll watch this and then like what will that what would that put me on to next like what what is that going to you know change like so I will I will be definitely yes I might do that once I get off this just watch just watch the first episode just to see what I'm getting.

And then if I text you a thumbs up and I'll be like oh it was interesting or if it's if it's a crying emoji then you'll know the

Brandon

got it. Yeah, version of good or bad. I like it, too. But yeah, I think I've probably watched a little bit more I'm gonna explore around a little bit and see if there's something else I don't know if I'll watch anymore slam dunk. I'm not sure I haven't decided yet exactly. was three episodes kind of got one little mini arc done. This enclosure, they're good. Because they did the first episode definitely is like, they're just talking and it's like

next time you're like, well, what?

Brandon

What happened? What's going on? That's why I went all the way to three. So, maybe I'll definitely I think, at least in the next week, I'm going to keep exploring and just kind of see what else is on there. Or is there anything else? Good or I might find look for one of those like newer ones that episode can is very low. Yeah, like talking about earlier where I don't want to, I definitely am not into trying to even start watching something that's got 700 episodes. So that was definitely kind of the things with like that one piece that's one of the big recall the original Attack on Titan, and that's that's kind of why I never got into that show or Naruto, or I never really ever watched The Last Airbender because especially with one piece because I'm ever going to when, when ever Hastings was still around, you know, go now with one right with one of my friends. And it's like, oh, he was like, man, I want to get into the manga series. And I also want to get like the box DVD set. And I remember going up to one of the cashier people like, Hey, you know, you guys got this and he's like, which one? Exactly? He showed us the, the manga series. And it's like, well, these, you know, 120 books, like, that's Volume One, like, I beg your pardon is like, oh, that here's the animated series in I was like, here's a 20 disc set. And that's, you know, first season and they're like, you know, five episodes on each disc. I like that point. So, there's some of that stuff kind of, you know, turns me away. It's like, I don't want to get vested. That's a lot of wired to that. But yeah, definitely starting easy with like the You know with with this one yeah, there's literally 12 episodes in my jaw Kiko my devil.

Yeah,

Brandon

so I might watch the first episode look at man. Or I can be like, well, how interesting. This is. My sweet, I believe. I mean, I'm double checking here. I believe if you are so inclined, yes. Yes, it's true Crunchyroll also has manga. Yeah, I was looking through that. So you can if you would like to read some extraordinarily random stuff I have which I don't know I just a whole nother level. For me. I have no idea what any of this is. So because you can just download it on your phone, right? I think so. Okay, or some of it. You can just open up on and just start I guess I don't know. I've never experimented with that. So Next week's challenge read manga. Oh dear. No, no, no, I have read.

So cool. I like this one when you do more like this I like the watching things, the kind of stuff and then talking about our history with it so it's true

Brandon

now that what now that Colin and I experimented with the Amazon watch party. Yeah, yo, yo, Aaron, in case you didn't know this. We tested it the other day to see if it worked. What you can do is we all have prime, right? Because we all watch grand tour. Is that correct? Okay, so what you can do is you go on there now, and it has to be on your computer so far, because it's brand new. Like this week, I guess. Or last week, I'm not sure.

When you go on to a show, you can click a watch party. And it gives you a link that you can email people and you can while watch it simultaneously with live chat with the chat. That was the cool part. Oh, Colin and I watched a random episode of James May our man in Japan and we're hanging out the live chat where he where he did go to the to the anime school

so

Brandon

we use that as inspiration right? When he was doing anime stuff.

Every time I hear about something that you can make commentary while watching it the only thing I can ever think of is Mystery Science Theater

3000

Brandon

because I love watching those guys. And I guess that's kind of where it's really difficult to make where I watch a movie now to where I have to try to comment on it and so if if you're any if you're a writer for Mystery Science Theater, I blame you for my you know, problem of trying to make comments during a movie, then we might have to try that out if we'll have time sometime to because it's it's cool because like Collin hosted it. So if he pauses it, it pauses it paused it for me. Ah and then if he like rewound it a reground it for me, so we're just watching it together all the time. Ah, When we were testing out the chat, it's pretty good. It doesn't alert you. So you had to be paying attention. I wasn't like flash at you or anything, Amazon. Put that in the comment section. I

did. I did several times.

At least make it flash. I mean, come on.

Brandon

We might have to pick something to watch on there to see. because it'd be kind of fun. It might be kind of fun to try to find something that none of us have ever seen before. I think we need to do that. For sure. That might be difficult. But we can

try. We will

start working on that. Okay, sweet. Love it.

Well, love you guys. Love you. Bye

Brandon

bye.
