Collin  00:04

Welcome to Oh, brother, a podcast of three brothers trying to figure it all out with your hosts, Brandon, Collin and Aaron. On this week's show. Build an umbrella. Hello. Can you can you hear me? Okay? Yes. Okay. I don't know how much of a delay there is or is not going to be on this so Godspeed to everybody involved. Oh yes. Also it is. My my allergies are in full swing. So I've been having to clear my throat about every 13 seconds. So if I don't get to the mute switch. So sorry.

Brandon  00:53

Well, that will be fun and exciting. Yes,

Collin  00:59

it will all be it will all make part of the show for sure. In some in some capacity. Maybe. Not.

Brandon  01:10

At all. We shall see. So what's so other than? Oh, you are sorry. Go ahead. Oh, I was gonna say I was gonna ask you other than dying of nasal congestion. How are things while you've been out here?

Collin  01:32

Yes. How are things? Ah,

Brandon  01:35

I

01:38

something something happened.

Brandon  01:40

Can you hear me? Can you hear me? You cut out real bad right there.

01:44

Okay, can you can you can you hear me now?

Brandon  01:48

Sort of. Oh, no. Okay, hold on.

Collin  01:53

No, no. Okay. Is this any better at all? Oh, wait a minute. Is this? Why are things happening? It's Oh, no. Can you Okay? How's this?

Brandon  02:02

I don't keep talking. Okay. Because it always starts good. And then it goes. You gotta keep talking. It's good. And then like, and then I did? Oh, no. Okay.

Collin  02:13

Well, we'll see if this can actually work tonight. I had my first time where I was charged by a dog while walking. Another dog today. This was quite fun and exciting.

Brandon  02:27

I Oh, good. Your first time?

Collin  02:32

Yeah, it's the first time I've ever been charged by an off leash dog. While walking a client's dog.

Brandon  02:42

I gotta say. I'm kind of surprised it's taken you this long for that to be your first time.

Collin  02:48

Now I've I've encountered off leash dogs before. And I've seen them from afar. This is the first time one is like, run up at me. Growling barking like on the offensive kind of thing. Letting me know that he was displeased

Brandon  03:08

of My Presence. That is Oh, well. Okay. gratulations I guess now

03:15

I feel like there should be a merit badge.

Brandon  03:21

Or something. Maybe? Yeah, maybe a bead bead?

Collin  03:25

I definitely. It feels like a bead thing. Yeah. Yeah, that did things stuff. Yeah. Yellow and Blue. That bead thing was called I don't remember, but I don't bad thing. Yeah. Was there an event that was an accounting thing where you got five black ones, and you could trade up for a different colored one. Is that if I'm remembering this correctly, or is that not true? Okay, so

Brandon  03:46

yes, there was that? Because that was like a that was like a I don't know, what was that for just going to the meetings, like just a weekly meeting.

Collin  03:56

Was that in attendance? Oh, no, you're right. There was the attendance bead. Yes. Yeah.

Brandon  04:01

And I think we kind of just sort of stopped doing that because everybody had like 20,000 or like, okay,

Collin  04:05

and it was on that weird like, leather belt loop clip thing. Right. Okay. Yeah,

Brandon  04:11

yeah, there was other stuff. They were specific beads for camping and certain things and like certain green bean breweries and like canoe trips and like the milers and summer camps may have I have one specifically for being in a tornado while camping.

04:30

Know that what color was

Brandon  04:32

black? It's a big black round one so yeah,

Collin  04:42

this is yeah, this is I agree this could this should have been a good bead. Good time for beading. Yeah, I feel like

Brandon  04:52

listening to her totally confused as a boy scout related thing, by the way, just so yeah. So what on earth? What are they Talking.

Collin  05:02

Honestly, we don't really even know at this point. But so yeah, so I got to collect that bead. And it was it was great. It was it was it was my heart was racing, everything engaged to do go into yelling. That was good. That was good. When you feel it makes you feel very aware of just how many people are possibly watching you, or not watching you, as you this dog is in the middle of the street, and I had two dogs with me. And I would put myself between them.

05:36

And

Collin  05:39

I first just yelled, whoa, like really loud. And that stopped the dog the first time. And then it started to encroach a little bit and charged up on me again. It probably got within like, six or seven feet of me. And that's when I just started GED. Yeah, it was not I was, it was a little like, ha, now like, now Yeah, I have my spray like malware now what it was really that question in my head of like, okay, well, the yelling didn't work. And again, like, this is stuff that we talk about, and we train for. But it's hard to be in that moment whenever you've never done this before. And I'm like, Okay, why we exercise when we do I go for my spray? When do I you know, do something and, and I yelled louder the second time and the dog stopped. And then I continued to walk away from it. And it kind of held its position there. And I continued to yell loudly. You know, go on home. Get out of here. Hey, there's a dog. So I was like both talking to the dog and also anybody who could possibly be listening to me in the nearby area. In the hopes that somebody would go, Oh, hey, where is my dog that is supposed to be in the backyard right now. Like, that's what I was hoping.

Brandon  06:57

And oh, it's in the middle of the street. Sure enough,

Collin  07:01

I heard somebody go, yell, yell a name. And he came out and the dog did not want to go back to him. It kept like, staring me down while I walked away. And he did the he did the great dog owner sign where he like, waved at me and said sure is okay.

Brandon  07:23

And I didn't seem okay into a giant moment.

Collin  07:26

Right? To which I responded, No, she's not come get your dog. And then he kind of he got closer to her and then grabbed her collar and like got her back and stuff. But for a few for a few seconds there. I was like this is going to go either way. Like usually in those situations the dogs not going to now here I'm going to speak from all of my great experience that I don't have, but I know. Yes, this is your first live firing because first of all my experience but all but everything. Everything that I've read, right according to Google, and dog trainers that I've talked to like the incidence of a dog like just straight up charging and coming up on you are really rare. Most of the time, they're just going to hold their ground and defend their turf. So if you keep moving away right there, that's a good sign. Now the other things get involved in that. All sorts of things. Thankfully, thankfully, my two dogs are one one is very old. And one is very clueless to like the so they had no idea like most of the stuff was going on so I had that going in my favor. Where I did not have to, to my dogs like at the ends of their leashes barking and trying to get at the other dog. That was very beneficial.

Brandon  08:45

They were here dogs playing it chill, like

08:47

Yeah, like dogs. My dogs are like, dogs like Oh, it's so pretty outside. Wow, look at the side. And there's a squirrel beat.

Collin  08:57

Right that's that's my two dogs for doing.

Brandon  09:00

Hey, you know, that's good. That's fine. That's why I was

Collin  09:04

so happy about this. Yeah, I was like, oh my goodness, thank goodness that they are just completely oblivious to everything going on right now because boy howdy, I'm not. And they they were not interested in this other dog. They were just, you know, wanting to go poop. And I was like, Okay, fine, like so that that was certainly very helpful in this situation. Because then the dog that dog was reading my body language, as opposed to trying to understand what the other doctors communicate because they weren't committed. They were communicating just blatant disinterest. Which was, again, very helpful. So but yeah, for those first couple seconds, it was like, wow, this is either, especially when it charges the second time it was like, okay, like that's, this is gonna go, this can go downhill really fast unless something changes and fortunately, after the fifth time I yelled something. That's when the owner came out. So the whole interaction was only a minute and a half, maybe too, but man, it really took it out of me. I had to go back to the house. I was like, Okay, who let's, let's, let's have a sit here. And let's all let's all recover

Brandon  10:19

by all I mean me because yeah two dogs are apparently so disinterested that oh,

Collin  10:25

yeah, they were just again I was like well thanks thank you thankfully but yeah, it's like I'm just gonna sit here and I'm gonna go ahead and oh, do this for them

Brandon  10:38

yeah so I'm glad you survived your ordeal and didn't have to like kick any dogs like karate chop anybody that's good. That's good news

Collin  10:53

Yeah cuz that's what I was going to next of like, okay, well I've got some I don't have heavy duty boots on we got boots on like, Yeah, we're gonna have to start getting like, what's my defense strategy here for these dogs to get them away? Like, thankfully I have long legs. I can swing wildly. So that's, that's what we're going

Brandon  11:12

to talk about. Yeah, that's, uh,

Collin  11:20

that was our most excitement that we had today. Oh, we we were we were this week. We were kind of bad,

Brandon  11:32

bad parents.

Collin  11:35

So Lillian and Noah go to the small kind of small private school up by us. And we had skipped not this past weekend. But the weekend before. It had been been at dads and which means we had missed Monday. Which is two Monday's ago. Well, because we missed that one. It means that we missed

Brandon  12:01

the the letter that came home

Collin  12:06

to talk about what the week of Easter was going to look like. Yes. So, no, we should. We showed up Monday morning. Like we got out the door. We got our lunch boxes. We're ready for the day. We got two books packed with dressed we've like preps you know, we're ready to go. We show up Monday sharp. We're early. And they're like,

Brandon  12:31

Oh, you didn't get the letter.

Collin  12:35

First off? No, it doesn't have school at all this week. But Lillian is just as she she. And we thought we thought it only started on Wednesday. Right? So we were like, oh, and then so no is like eighth off entirely. Lilly it. On the other hand, she's just doing some testing today, like for standardized testing is when we're doing it right now. And so, and she's gonna be here only for three hours. Yeah, they because they do they do a weird schedule. And it's yeah, they're they don't do. They don't do the Missouri standardized testing.

Brandon  13:15

It's something different. It's weird.

13:18

It's weird. Okay.

Brandon  13:21

That is weird.

Collin  13:23

So I'm not 100% sure about what it is. I think it's an Iowa state test. But because they're what? Yeah. Because they're a private school. They can kind of choose which standardized testing. Yeah, so that's what they that's what they do. I don't know why they don't do. I don't know. I don't know. I've never asked I should ask Why does Zuri because I think that'd be

Brandon  13:51

I don't know what kind of answer they would have. Yeah, that's that's very confusing. I don't know. Why, yeah.

Collin  14:05

I don't I don't know if it's, if it's easier for them or if they have certain requirements, but that seems weird. So it just I know, they do the Iowa state testing. That's the stamp. That's what they test to.

14:21

Which doesn't seem you know,

14:25

whatever. So she

Brandon  14:27

Yeah, that's real confusing. I did not know that doesn't make any sense. Why would they do that? Like, I mean, I mean, there is no real state testing in Missouri until third grade anyway. So

Collin  14:43

well, maybe that's maybe that's is why oh, you know, that could be it. What because she's in second grade knows in kindergarten, so they may do the Iowa testing for the younger kids. That could be it because I would testing goes really maybe yeah Young, they can choose their choosing to do that. And Missouri would recognize that as a standardized test, and that but then, yeah, and then that makes sense, because even then, like the high schoolers take the Iowa testing, but that's because that they're all part of that system now. Like they took the Iowa test when they were in kindergarten. So they're gonna take it whether anyway, so it could make sense, I guess, listeners in Iowa, right in why? Why? So we, yeah, so we showed up Monday, ready for a full day of school. And it was only three hours. And then they said, Oh, and also, you need to come back on Tuesday, for another three hours of testing. And then you're off. So we were all sorts of discombobulated this week. And trying to get on board that. So no, no, it's just been doing the whatevs this week. And Lilian had a little bit more

Brandon  15:59

intense testing to get to get done. That sounds pretty terrible. Yeah,

Collin  16:11

and we like, we didn't prepare her for any of it. Like, obviously, you know, there's no studying that you can do for these. But like, if I would have known, like, if I would have known, I would have least tried to describe to her what the process is like, and like, gotten her use, like, telling her about the bubbles and the pencils and the you know, the teachers gonna read to you a lot. And I just try and prepare her mentally for what that's going to be like,

Brandon  16:38

and but we didn't do that.

Collin  16:42

And we just shut up. And we were the parents were the administrators were like, Oh, you did you read the letter? We sent a letter? And I was like, No, we did get the letter. We weren't here if we played hooky from school. Nobody got us the letter. So oops.

Brandon  17:02

That is unfortunate. They should have sent it out earlier. Right. Like it's a little bit weird to send it out. Like, oh, by the way, next week, we're gonna do this way. But wait. A little bit more advanced notice would have been pretty handy. Right? Some little more time to prepare for these things, not just like, oh, yeah, we're mailing a letter to where you'll get it the day that you need to know about.

Collin  17:26

Right. Right, because yeah, that little bit of advanced warning would have been great. But what about you? What's your what's your week? Been? You guys survived some storms? I hear.

Brandon  17:43

Oh, yeah. It was a pretty interesting weather time in the Midwest this last week. Right? very eventful days. Luckily, we didn't really too bad here, right? We had just enough of a stabilizing effect in the atmosphere that it just sort of, there were some pretty heavy thunderstorms about like five in the morning. And then that was it. That was all that we had. Right? We didn't really have the severe threat did not really materialize for southern Missouri, which is great news. This is wonderful. Like there's pretty much Yeah, speaking of Iowa, I know that they cannot say the same thing. We were watching. I was watching some storm chasers. And that's where they all were. So that's a little rough. But I saw some stuff there. It's very interesting. Right? The this sort of like, this space on the internet where storm chasers live, right. It's very strange place. Cuz what I was watching all day, including, like several people who just like, they just like live stream, weather radar stuff. And they're just like doing like, some of them are just actual meteorologists. And they're just sort of live streaming from their house looking at weather radar, talking about stuff. And then they're like, talking to storm chasers. And but it's just, it's very odd. Right. The whole experience was a very strange thing. This thing I've actually discovered online of this weather live streaming event, right? Yeah, because a lot of these chaser dudes are out. Chasing, and they're live streaming, they're storm chasing. Right? And then there's other guys who are just like, hanging out at home. But they're, like, analyzing weather radar stuff. And like, basically doing like news, severe weather coverage, but like, not just your local news station. It's like multi state like National Weather cover They're just like hanging out doing that. Like, what? Kind of cool, right? Because you, you can just like whip it up. And they're talking about all these different places and looking at stuff and like talking to dudes out. So it was very interesting, right? It was a whole community that I did not know existed at all. And so that was my discovery this week is the excuse me the big, like, interconnected web that is like, live streaming storm chasers. Who knew? Now that's for sure.

Collin  20:38

What do you what is the ratio of like? Meteorologists, storm chasers to like buddies and a van storm chasers? Like how what's the mix?

Brandon  20:55

Well, the, a lot of them are just like out there's like, it's like dash cam stuff. Right. So they're just like dash cam. But then they're like Mike so they can like talk and things. And they're just like dash cam. And a lot of them do like a, I saw a couple where like, the main screen is the dash cam. And then like on the side, they have like an inset map of like, the radar thing you're looking at. And some of the some of them even have a Google overlay of like, here's me, here's my little blue dot black. It's like their Google Map, like stuck on. Oh, that's cool. Stuck on the weather map. Sounds pretty cool. Right? There's a lot of that stuff. But uh, but there is also another number of just like, dudes in their house. Like one of the guys I was watching. He's just in his house. And he has like this whole big setup, and some sort of like crazy computer program thing. And he was just like, kind of like, it was literally just like a live stream of news broadcasts whenever they break in and talk about the weather stuff. Or that severe threat in your area. Yeah, but it was over a multistate thing was really cool. And they did it for like hours. Right? It was like hours and like, not just like five minutes. It was like, you know, they were live for like 789 hours. It was pretty crazy. Like that was cannito. So watch that. It's awesome stuff. Looked at the weather, you know, said Ah, Iowa. That's not Missouri. I feel much better. No, not to make light of the tornadic situation in Iowa, of course, because that was pretty gnarly. There was some pretty hectic stuff going out there. Plus then the next day, there was a lot of people still going over to like Indiana, Ohio, through Illinois, kind of stuff. So if a little Michigan I think had some potential weather outburst stuff so it was pretty crazy. I didn't know that I was watching one guy in Iowa and he found the baseball sized hail that they were having. So that's about as well as you can imagine. Oh, no. was enormous up there. So that windshields gone like that of the truck destroyed. Right like trunk huge holes in it right? It's crazy. Yeah, that's

Collin  23:44

That's intense stuff. I can't I can't even imagine at that point. Like why don't

Brandon  23:51

why don't imagine that.

23:52

What do you even do? Right? Like what do you where do you how do you Yeah, I just No, thank you.

Brandon  23:59

Oh, he fled you like the other way? Like going into the storm. Right? We're going towards the storm. Giant hail falls like Nope, just kidding. Oh, no way. Gotta get outta here. This is not a hill core. I want to exist in for any amount of time right. No, no, we're pretty bad songs out there. So yeah, we did that. survive the freezing cold. That was then the next day.

Collin  24:37

It was well, yeah, we weren't we had very we had 85 degrees that the day the storms, but the day before the storms moved in overnight. And like Tuesday, right? Yeah, it was and then yes, it just fell off the

Brandon  24:55

planet after that. Yeah, I think Thank you because like I said, down here, our phones didn't come through to like, five o'clock in the morning or so. And so I think there was even still then like, 30 degree temperature difference, right? It was like kinda, you know, it was like, you know, 60 degrees, maybe like high 60s and then that's how I was going to school. They're like, little after seven was like 33

Collin  25:31

Yeah, we had a nice frost warning, go into effect, which, which made everybody in Okay, yeah, made everybody in my household. Very happy.

Brandon  25:47

Indeed.

Collin  25:48

And I had to go out and do an emergency cover the new sunflower plants that we had all just just planted, we had we run around with the bedsheets like I was. Get this one. Well, and then and then we had the issue of, we had the bedsheets but the last time I had to put bedsheets on it last spring, I didn't have anything to prop the bedsheets up. So the bed sheets just like collapsed on top of the little plants. And then the frost happened on top of the bed sheets with students just frosted through to the plants. So I had

Brandon  26:26

some problems right, getting a steak or something like

Collin  26:31

that. I was doing like sticks. We had some kitchen utensils like big, like stirring spoons that we don't use very often. I was sticking in the ground. Little pieces of PVC pipe that dad had given to Noah to play with that I was taking apart and like trying to of course, craft something. To to keep it okay. Yeah, I was like, Oh my gosh. What's going on? That's funny. It was, it was it was

Brandon  27:08

steaks like a circus tent and you feel like you're Dumbo, right? Like?

Collin  27:13

Yes. Yeah, it was like Dumbo without the animal abuse. It was fine. And I was very

Brandon  27:19

at the beginning part of that putting up the tent. Yes.

Collin  27:21

I did feel like that on a very small scale. So hopefully all the critters in the area got some sort of

Brandon  27:28

laughter from it, but enjoyment and that guy there are doing the same thing though, so they didn't have time to look at you. Yeah, we're also out like, frantically covering their begonias with towels or something like I don't know.

Collin  27:44

Yeah, I wasn't the I wasn't the only crazed person with towels and sheets out there trying to make sure everything was fine. Yeah, that that least that gave me comfort you know that was that made me happy.

Brandon  27:56

That's you know that you're not alone. Right? It's always comforting.

28:00

I'm not the only crazy person out here.

Brandon  28:03

Yes. Sure. Yeah, that was about it, whether excitement and then had to think about things like about today at school, right? Because it's like, okay, well, now we have a four day weekend for Easter. But we need to do stuff. But we're ready to start our study guide because we're done with our unit. But I'm definitely not doing that before a four day weekend. Raha has a terrible plan.

Collin  28:46

Yeah, well so so so were you were you able to implement your well I don't know because we last time we had talked about you had this little you know this ongoing projects and stuff but you you're not implementing that for for this semester.

Brandon  29:03

Are you Yeah, no, I that's still the planning stage for next year. Yeah, we did sort of dip in and do some of that today. We did do a little bit of side quests today. We built we I so I got to school. I finally decided what I was gonna do. So I had to get to school and like immediately rummage through my storage closets. I had to find various materials. Oh, of which there are plenty, but I had to get them all out and be like, Oh, what am I going to use this? I decided since we are studying weather, and we just had like a bunch of weather that we were going to build a waterproof shelter to keep something dry. But using just like random stuff from my cabinets or like coffee filter. This random playing card is like just normal classroom paper. Q tips like You have to build a waterproof structure, right? I think that official, the stim activities could like build an umbrella or something, but it doesn't necessarily have to be an umbrella. You just have to put you have to make something dry. So I found some little rocks in from my collection and wrap them up with the, you know, the brown paper towel from the bathroom. Yeah, that's cool. Yeah. I wrapped them up with that, so that we could see if they got wet. Great.

Collin  30:31

Ah, because we all know that those paper towels are, are wonderful at showing you how much water is on your hands, but not actually doing very much about it.

Brandon  30:42

It doesn't remove any of the water. It just says yep.

Collin  30:45

Water. Yes. Wow, your hands are really really wet. You should do something about this.

Brandon  30:50

Yeah, good thing. They're gonna stay that way. Loser. Yeah.

Collin  30:55

Yeah. Or may have there's a lot of water in that water bottle you just spilled over, but I'm not gonna do anything about anything about that.

Brandon  31:02

sterile. So yeah, we did I wrapped them in that. And then I put it. So I did, I decided what I did was I found a basket, like a wire mesh baskets, right. And I turned it upside down. And I put the rock on that. And then underneath that whole thing I put, like just a big plastic bin that I had. So that we could sort of contain the water kind of didn't work. 100% But it's fine. I just use some paper towels to scoot it around a little bit.

31:35

Pushy. I you smeared it around so that evaporation will take care of Yeah,

Brandon  31:39

yeah, I pushed it into the trash can. But that way, it wouldn't be sitting in a puddle of water. Right? Because that's not as an exciting test. If your whole rock is just sitting in the water that you just dumped in the pan. Right? It's not. I then I filled one of my beakers up. And I like held it way above. And I put it through like a screen. I have like one of those wire screens that you set over a burner, you know? Yeah. Yeah, I held that up. And then I poured the water through the screen. So we got some nice rain effect. Oh, I should have moved it around. You know, it split the water as it was falling through kind of gave us some drops. So we did that today. So we did. We built did the challenge of building an umbrella.

Collin  32:35

And what was the what was the winningest design? Or how did you how did you judge this?

Brandon  32:42

Well, we just we judged by how many water spots that were on? Yeah. Okay. Right. Like how wet the thing got. And then I just put them on my chalkboard tray in the order. of least two greatest spots, right. And the ones with the least wins. And I just had to put their names above it. So that you that I really didn't do that the first hour. But after that, I was like, Wait, that's a better plan, I should do that. Yeah, do that they're pretty good. They a lot of them use the, the kind of the most common design sort of turned into like they used to, they took the plank cards, and they cut them up, right. And they made like, actually kind of looks like an umbrella, they use the playing cards to make a little walls. And they then put they took the concrete filter turned it upside down. And kind of they use that as their little make like a little hut thing. And they use the playing cards to make a little wall in there to keep it up. And then they would layer papers. And any leftover playing card pieces are on the top. So they tried to make as many layers on the top as they could try to get them. So kind of tried to make like a an angled roof so that the water would go off within like cover the top a little bit. That was the most common right. The problems that we had was the ones that didn't angle the roof. Right. Some of them like once the water started hitting it, they would fall to one side. Yeah. Yeah, slide over a little bit and that repositioning sometimes was not great for the rock because it would either bring it into direct contact with the coffee filter, which obviously you like, they like cheap coffee filters. So they're not really they like turn see through the second you pull

34:41

water. Oh no. Yeah, yeah, you need these all those layers? Yeah.

Brandon  34:47

Yeah, so they would put layers on there. So they would use the play like some sort of combo of like toothpicks or playing cards or cute hips or whatever to like, make it And so that didn't like just lay directly on top of the rock. And then they would just sort of drape the things over and try to like shingle it out. So that it wouldn't be that there was a there was definitely other plans as well. But that was the most common thing that I saw today, which is very interesting that that many people hit on that one. But, you know, they probably just looked at the shape of the coffee filter was like, Okay, we're gonna use this as our as our plan and then we're gonna go for that to happen. Or they're pretty good. They have a lot. There was a one of the classes like the difference between the, what we ended up calling first and second was like, one drop of water. So like, Huh, that's pretty good, right? Yeah. It's pretty good. So that was today's fun. We did that. Just sort of mix it up. Because like I said, we're not doing a study guide on a four day we can't get out. Well, that's terrible idea.

Collin  36:04

Yeah, no, that's not it's not good. Interestingly, we had a, I had a very similar discussion with, with Noah on Monday, the day that we should have at school and we're like, Oh, here you go. Oh, no, he's off all day today. Well, that changes some plans. So he went on. He went on a my adventure hike with me on Monday, because we moved it. It was supposed to be the Friday before but we had some storms moving in that day. So we move the hike to Monday. So Noah got to go on the adventure hike with me. And he he noted how dry it was under all of the cedars was like actually, you know,

Brandon  36:51

if we were ever logged, he's been watching those survival shows, right? And

36:56

well, because we were talking about like, how muddy this thing was over here, be careful of the trail and then we go through several pretty dense cedar groves in this hike. And he goes, he goes, Oh, the trails not as bad here. And I was like, Why do you think that is? And he was like looking around and I was like locked up?

Brandon  37:15

Yeah. Go What's that over there? Cranes neck upward?

Collin  37:20

upward? Yeah. We, we talked about how those are, those are great. Those little cedar growths are great shelters if you're lost in the woods, and you need to get out of the elements. Because they cut down on the wind. They have lots of cedar boughs to build stuff with. And in the meantime, it cuts down on you getting wet while you build your shelter. And so each time we would go through a little Cedar Grove he go, we could camp here.

Brandon  37:47

We could indeed we could. We

Collin  37:49

couldn't it I said an added bonus. It's nice and soft under them too. Because of all the

Brandon  37:56

things move the sticks, right? Yeah, big, big,

Collin  37:59

big get the big sticks out of the way. But after that it's not too bad. So yeah. Our little little mini survival. So

38:08

that was a little lesson in the wilderness. Like it, wilderness survival.

Brandon  38:15

But that that's very bad, for sure, though. So but that went on the high end. But yeah,

Collin  38:23

other than that, it's been a weird week, it's been off week with the unexpected times with the kids being off been kind of just adjusting to that, and onboarding, some new staff members.

38:34

So it's the first time that we've hired in our other location, our home location in like 11 months, we were not

Brandon  38:47

quite different from the

Collin  38:52

11 days. Pretty much. Fine. Just different reasons. And so this, so Yeah, nobody's left. We're actually needing to add a person because we're so busy, right? So I was like, wow, this is great. And the person that we're adding we're trying to cover weekend mornings, because right now we just have one person who covers all of the weekends, which is fine. Except, like, now like this this coming weekend.

Brandon  39:27

They're working

39:29

six until

Brandon  39:30

I say, yeah, that million hours. Yeah. Yeah. Like,

Collin  39:33

seriously, like, it's so funny when I look at the hours that they submit. I'm like, man, and then I remember they only work two and a half days a week and I'm like, lie. You need some help. Like, yeah, I need help. Because they're putting in the same amount of hours sometimes for people who work

Brandon  39:52

five days a week. Oh, gross.

Collin  39:55

Yeah. Yeah. And they say they're fine. Like their previous job. They were worked, manufacturing shifts. So they're used to doing like, three days or 12 hours. Yeah, but it's not, it's not the same, it's not the same. It's

Brandon  40:10

so getting them some help.

Collin  40:14

So we're onboarding that person training actually at the training stages for the person in Springfield. And so that's been just making sure all that keeps moving forward. And like, gosh, several months ago, I sat down and shot a bunch of videos. And I was like, wonderful. My onboarding videos are done. But then, my staff, the new staff person was like, Hey, I didn't get the email with the thing that you said, I get in the video. And in my head, I was like, Are they talking about? We haven't

40:47

used that service and who know, I still try to videos are out of date, I have to go reshoot my videos, my precious video.

Brandon  40:57

I mean, all of all of them are just like wine. Right?

Collin  41:00

Like, just like, and that's, that's the annoying parts. And so, so I have not done this yet. But I have to go in and have to decide, can I? Can I cut this? Or do I have to reshoot this? Right? Can I? Can I? Yeah. Why stop the video such that I can just, you know, remove those words magically? Or? Or is it egregious enough? If like, if I'm talking about it in a context? I have no like it's been? It's been a minute since I've, since we've, since I've done this. So I have to have to figure out what exactly I need to excise. Or if I have to redo the

41:40

whole thing. Fine. Yeah. And then

Collin  41:50

I was like, Oh, that's right. Nothing is ever done. And I have changed this, do this thing. Ah, so the other thing that we have to do that we're that's on our plate is what we currently have, I don't know if it was nepotism, or whatever. But like, we have our onboarding staff members, listen to a few episodes of the other podcast, we don't have them listen to this episode, this this podcast, we're part of their onboarding. Should though.

Brandon  42:24

They really know who they're dealing with. They're like, Oh, my God, what's happening?

Collin  42:31

That's yeah, I should have listened to a few episodes of that one. But I, we've got to go back. And we've just make them all bespoke and more tailored. At this point, it was just easier in the beginning to say, Oh, we've already talked about this. But but we really, we've got it auto, we've kind of like trying to sketch out a more like focused bespoke for us, our company and our staff, like, not just a gin, it's, it's pretty generic, at that for those for those other ones. So we got we got a, that's, um, that's on my, on my to do list as well. So I'm gonna go into the

Brandon  43:11

recording studio, and, you know, record this now,

Collin  43:18

so I, ah, in like, two weeks, we're gonna get a a a big I'm excited getting a better mobile recording rig. Oh, so excited. We'll have try that out some point as well. Guys, especially cuz right now I just route when I travel. So when Megan I traveled the other week, I had to bust down basically everything from the office recording area and bring it because of how things are connected. So I have now a little travel

44:02

microphone interface, like it's very small, and it can record either on its own or it can act as an interface to the computer. And a couple other little things that come with that. So I'm excited about about that. It's been on my to do list that's been on my to do list for like a year and a half is to get a better mobile recording rig. So that'll be interesting to try

Brandon  44:27

out here soon. Yeah, yes. Very exciting. New toys are always fun.

Collin  44:37

Yeah, I got really excited about and then I was like, Oh, great. Like, on one hand, I'm really excited about you know, getting to futz with it and getting to the go through all the menus and the dials and stuff. And then there this is probably just me probably getting older and tired. And now I'm like, I kind of go through all the dials and all the pots I gotta futz with it. Like I gotta have I gotta find time like Oh, Okay, like, I'm excited for when we get dialed in, but at the same time going, Yeah, I gotta go through that. But I'm not excited

Brandon  45:06

about the dialing. Like I'm excited about being done not excited about doing it, right. Oh, that's how a lot of things are really? Yeah.

45:20

But it'll be fine. It'll be fine. So,

Brandon  45:22

after all, yeah, definitely. Was it good? Alright, so the enclosing today, we have another installment of fugue state Movie Reviews. Right, it's hard to have a list of other things, you should see this list that I made the other day because I was thinking about movies that were that wouldn't fit this criteria. And my list is just like a hot mess. It's just like the movie where this one thing and then this other thing and like this happened, Googling music, it's gonna be a nightmare for those

Collin  46:07

who are interested in those interested. fugue state movie reviews made its debut back on episode 143. Back in June of 2022. And we are sitting here now. Exactly 40 episodes on so I think this is becoming a 40 episode. Deal. I

Brandon  46:31

don't put that on the air. But it might take me that long to actually find the name one of these things, let alone the actual to be able to watch it like

Collin  46:43

okay, so break it down. But it says this, I was gonna say like the semi annual fugue state movie reviews but similar but

Brandon  46:52

periodic it's periodical right. Yeah. Yeah. Now, some contexts, right. This one is slightly different. This was not a movie that I because of the last movie was a movie that was like, a late night movie on like, box or something. And it was just like, on in the background, while I was doing other things with like, my friend was over at my house. Okay, that was this movie is a movie that I had to have seen. At some point when I was like, five. Right? That that has to have been the timeframe. Okay, so I'm pretty sure. I saw this movie in some context, at Mimi's house in Illinois. That gives you a timeline here. Okay? It's very old right. Now, I don't know how I would have watched it. That part sort of eludes me. I don't really know how I saw this. But I have one memory from this movie. Okay. This I this movie, the memory that I had going in? was a night charging something on his horse. Okay, that was it. As animated, right? Is an animated night, charging something on his horse. Now, I remember this part of the movie, partly because I have a vague memory of me attempting to emulate this on a rocking horse and getting yelled at or standing on top of a rock. I have a memory of like standing on it. Like the one that has in the basement. You know, the woods, the one that actually rocks, right? So it was either that exact one or one similar to that. I remember standing on it. And like rocking back and forth and being scolded, because that is clearly an unsafe behavior. That's obvious. Obviously. It's like, well, they did it in the movie. I seem to remember saying something like that, which probably went over just really well. Knowing our mother and father that probably just was a great thing for me to say like I saw the movie, so that'd be cool. Yeah. Yes. So this was all I had to go on. To track down this movie, which not easy to do. I believe I have found it. Oh, right. I recognize the art style, I think is what I did. I saw some pictures and stills. I was like, Wait a minute. Wait a minute here, huh? So in real time, the movie that I believe that I saw is drumroll No. Okay. Disney's Disney's 1941 The Reluctant Dragon is a locked in. Dragon. Okay. Yeah. Okay, this is it. You've seen that? Sure. This This movie is very odd. So I Okay, so some more backstory, I believe what I watched was the 1987 VHS release, because in that it is only the animated short, the reluctant dragon and something else. Right? Hmm, I think that's, that's what it was. That's what I had to have seen is this is this, this VHS release from 87 or 88 or whatever. It just has the reluctant dragon short in it. Because the version that I just watched this week is much longer and has a whole bunch more real weird stuff in it. Oh, no. I don't remember ever seen before in my life. So I think I watched this like a little it must have been it's like a 20 minute or something. Like animated story of the reluctant dragon. It's like basically a dragon who doesn't want to do dragony stuff, hang out and eat snacks, you know, as one does. Okay. But the version that I watched today or that not today, but this week is the full original theatrical release, which is like an hour in something. And it's real weird. Alright, so it's basically the story. It's like a behind the scenes Disney tour. Kinda right. That's what it is. What it's like a dude who wants to go he is like a guy who thinks that the reluctant dragon it's a book, I guess. Should be a Disney movie. So he goes to the at that time brand new Disney animated studios and like asks to see a Walt. And like, he's just like going through and like, looking at stuff. He's like taking a tour of the studio. So the whole first part is like they go into the room and there's like a drawing class right. Other side note the movie starts out in black and white. And when they go into that Technicolor room with like the cameras and stuff the movie like flips to color just kind of funny, right? Yes. kinda hilarious. You like just keeps walking? Do you just like wandering in random doors in this nice studio. Like, here's the art class. Here's the Technicolor room. Here's where they make paint or the acetate paintings right here's where they're doing the backgrounds. Here's the voice working fully studio like What the What the What the what? Here's the animators storyboarding room like it's insane. How, how Disney promotional?

Collin  53:41

How weird it wasn't actually, the whole thing wasn't actually animated.

Brandon  53:52

Yeah, it's weird. It's not like, like this whole thing, where he's just like, looked around. And that wasn't released either. VHS later, that didn't get released into like, way later, I guess. Because maybe they're like, Oh, this is lame. And nobody wants to watch this. So it's real weird. Real strange. It has the classic. It's like it definitely has a touch of that like 1940s problematic Disney. Right where you're like, Oh, that's a racist stereotype there. Oh, these are like just like, lightly sexist comments for fun, right? Like, yeah. Oh, it's fun. Time, right. Yeah, I mean, these were definitely fine things in like 1940 Right. This is what everyone would be like. In 2023 Like, yeah, like what actually knew about now? Yeah. Ah, just like awkward because you're like, in the world. It has that touch of, you know, problematic Disney from the 40s just sprinkled in there. But it's kinda, it reminds me of the Have you ever seen the Saudi database amigos? It's like the Disney animators go to South America. Right? That kind of it's like a behind the scenes thing. It weirdly heavily features Donald Duck, which is also strange, right? Like, what Mickey Mouse is supposed to be? Yeah, Donald Duck is all over this thing, right? Like they go to the thing when they're talking to the voice actor. There, you get to see the dude, that voice is Donald Duck. Oh, I was like, there. That's what I like, doing the Donald Duck voice into the microphone. It's crazy. It's real weird to see those. See those sounds coming out of a real person?

55:45

Not a duck. Right? Because

Brandon  55:51

then when they go to the animators thing they're talking about like, they're putting the at one point he's in the studio, where they're putting the they're like, they're doing the painting of the character and then like putting him over the background. You know? Yeah. It's on the acetate paper or the clear, like the projector paper on or not predicted? Yeah, the overhead projector paper, you know, it's talking about that stuff, whatever that's called. And then they, they like paint it and then they put it over the background, and then they like, take the picture. And then they put the next painting down and they take the picture, and they put it all together it like is animated. They're showing how that process works. And that the character that they're animating is Donald right so there's like this little thing with Donald Duck like you know, it's like that weird Disney thing where like they do the process and then he like comes to life and he's talking to you like this is how it works blah blah blah like Donald Duck explaining how animation works it's very weird Wow.

56:57

While he gets animated huh

Brandon  57:04

yeah, and then like at the end like waltz there so they do the little thing and and then the end is the animated short of the reluctant dragon. So it's like it's a little short where it's like a kid is reading a book and then like they village says there's a dragon nearby so he goes to see the dragon and his book is all about like scary dragons fighting knights and then like the dragon is like you know splashing around in a pond and like having a tea party. So like the dragon doesn't like to do Dragon II things. And basically the the dragon the boy goes to see this night named Mr. Giles which is the night that I remember that memory that I have is that guy. He's like an old guy with a monocle and a big mustache. And they are talking about this and they like rig a fight with the dragon so that the villagers will cheer for the night and then like oh you know he's quote slays the dragon and then like, then the dragon like says I promise not to be bad anymore and then he doesn't have to hide from the townspeople because they just like are like cool. You can hang out now like because you've been slain right? That's

58:25

so bizarre.

Brandon  58:27

But it's like it's like all like put on like at one point they go to the cave and you like you hear fighting noises but it just goes inside and it just like eating pots. Right now No, no. Oh. Like drinking tea together and like kicking pans or whatever. Okay, that's That's great. Guys, buddy. Funny. But that yeah, so that is the movie. That is my fugue state we review from so I had to have been like five or six when I saw this. And I haven't seen it since until this week.

Collin  59:09

So my question my first trip. My question for you was,

Brandon  59:13

how did you find this? Well, I was just sort of like looking at. I was. So there's a process, right? This process took me several weeks. Okay, sure. I was trying to pare it out. Because I was looking, I knew it was an animated movie. Right. And so that's really where I started. And then I sort of was just looking at stuff and I saw a thing that was like old like I saw this thing that was like Disney movies from the 40s. And I was like looking early Disney movies like an article about early Disney movies. And I was scrolling through there and I saw the DVD cover for this thing. I was like Wait a minute is the image that I remember

Collin  1:00:08

all comes flooding back to you.

Brandon  1:00:10

Wow Yeah Okay, I gotta look this up so I looked it up and I saw some stuff was like okay this is it I gotta find where to watch this right I got it that's crazy this movie and I did not know like I said before I had to have seen it on VHS was like some other shorts or something because this whole animated this studio tour nonsense I get. That was a complete surprise. I was watching this. I was like, What the heck? Did I click on the right thing? What is going on? Well, yeah, we'll be talking about the book The Reluctant dragon and I was like, Okay, I guess I'll keep watching this because I'm broken fuse now.

Collin  1:00:58

When I saw when you started talking about this, I was Googling to see, you know, is there did I have I ran across this before? And the answer is no. I've never seen this before. But I was really confused when I went over to I Googled 1940 ones, right 9040 ones, the reluctant dragon. And I was getting the animated and then I was getting the black and white photos of people like looking at models and stuff. And I was like, Are there two movies in 1941? About the little reluctant dragon? No, it's

Brandon  1:01:33

just no weirdly those are the same. Weird Yes. It's the same big

Collin  1:01:41

that's what I was very I was like, What on earth is this? Like? Why?

Brandon  1:01:47

So I was as the experience I had watching it. Ah, he like walks through this drawing studio. There's an elephant. I was like, What? What is going on? Oh, that's

Collin  1:02:03

great. Well, that's I was not expecting that turn there. That's for sure. Wow, what it what a trip and what a what a weird movie.

Brandon  1:02:14

Do you think it is digital weird? Did you

Collin  1:02:19

read about like, why the movie was produced the way it was? Was it wasn't meant to be a promotional thing to get people on board.

Brandon  1:02:28

Yeah, it's kind of like a promotional thing. Right? Like, it's a bet it's like to kind of show off the TV. The studio, right? And then like, stuff like that. And in no. Yeah, it's just real strange. If there's also some weird thing about like, how they actually didn't release it until like the middle of animator strike. So that was a choice. You released the whole thing like, showing a video about how your animators work. And you drop that in the middle of the animator strike job. Walt, what a plan that was. Yeah, not. Yeah. That could have been done better. But yeah, it's just kind of like a studio. It's like, right, when they built the new what do they call this thing? The new like Disney studio. Right? And they go, it's like a whole the most of them. It's a tour. Right? So this breakdown here on Wikipedia. It's like they go to the drawing room. It's like it's a live drawing class, which is where your first casual sexism sexism starts, because he's like, Oh my God, they're talking about the live models. And he's like, ooh, Lutie it's elephant. Oh, definitely. Right. This is also where they drop your drops from racism just on your plate because like, one of the animators is Chinese. So her elephant has like squinty eyes and a right hat. Oh, haha. So funny.

1:04:07

Right, like

Brandon  1:04:11

Yeah, but then then they go into the film score room. And Clarence Nash is just they're doing the Donald Duck voice. Wow. They go into the Foley studio, where they're doing there's like a little short about the train from Dumbo, but it's still in black and white, right that, you know, like recording it shows them like doing all the Foley and like the sound effects and like throwing, you know, whatever. Then there's the camera room with the big like multi plane giant 20 foot tall Technicolor camera thingy. There's the ink department, the ink and paint where they're like making paint and all that stuff. The MAT making department the storyboard thing. The animator room Boom, like all this crazy stuff. It's just nuts. It's like, it's really weird. And it has to just be like a promotional thing, right? Just like that. So you know, those amigos where it's like a promotional thing. It's talking about how they find inspiration and how they do this stuff, blah, blah, it's like in that very same vein. Right? So it's, it has to be just a promotional thing. And they just like slipped in an animated short at the

Collin  1:05:30

well, I think it fits with that, because then they can kind of show off. Because it seems like just from my cursory look there, the animated short is fondly looked back on as, as a real gem of good animation and putting everything together. So sounds like

Brandon  1:05:49

they did. Please fit the bill with with that part. Yeah, right. It's just so strange. It's so it's, I was completely taken aback by the studio tour thing. Like, I was watching it, and I was seriously like, this thing opens and, like, it's a lady. Like she's reading the book. Right? And so I was like, Okay, this must be like, part of the story. And then it comes to like, just a dude and his wife in their house. And I was like, what was, like, 1940 these dudes in their house? Like, there's Bentley guy, who's like, just him his wife in the house talking. I was like, Wait a minute.

1:06:35

What am I watching now?

Brandon  1:06:38

Yeah, also, this movie does it like it's it. If you just watch it, and the way that it happens, you would prefer that you could just like drive down to California and just like walk in and see well just be like, Hey, what's up? What's very loose guy basically, does he just like, he just like shows up? And they're like, do you have an appointment? He's like, Well, no, and he's like, Okay, we're here just a minute. And he brings him a pass and he's like, Okay, go in

Collin  1:07:10

LAX very lax security, you know, you know how that is. I don't think

Brandon  1:07:15

that's how it works. They just like rock up and be like, Yo, I'm here to see well Disney you got an appointment? No, okay go on and Sir like what?

1:07:24

I'm sure he'll be glad to see you anyway right on

Brandon  1:07:29

so strange don't understand maybe there's a joke here because this is this Robert Bentley is going to be maybe he's like living in 1901. Like, oh, yeah, the page currently won't look so I can't like a guy that can just walk Disney. Even if I can't, right maybe. Maybe he's allowed to because he's known

Collin  1:08:16

person. I think he has. I think he has connections that you probably don't that's fine. You're gonna have to just

Brandon  1:08:23

might have some connections. Okay, maybe I'll live I don't know.

Collin  1:08:31

Keep reading and find out maybe maybe, maybe there's still hope.

Brandon  1:08:36

Yeah, we'll find out. I'll see. Do some more research into that later. But yeah, that was my that was my new installment of here. I love this.

Collin  1:08:47

Okay, the next Yeah, the the in the periodical fugue state Movie Review.

Brandon  1:08:54

Yeah, I got at least three more on my list over here. So we'll see okay. If I find any more if I can think of any more will be added to it. But I wrote him down finally because I was like, I'm gonna continue to forget the don't write down these random scribbling of like, the thing that I remember that one scene per movie, like the movie, it's all of my notes are like, the movie where this one thing happened.

Collin  1:09:21

I assume. I assume more happens. But this is all I have at this moment. Yeah, just

Brandon  1:09:27

more like okay, well, I'm pretty shown. I'm sure I know what the movie is. But which version of the movie is it? I know. I don't, because it's

1:09:41

good NATO. Oh, that'd be maddening. Okay, well, we will look forward to that.

Brandon  1:09:47

Next to some point in the future.

1:09:51

Maybe. Yeah, maybe. Maybe.

Brandon  1:09:55

I can actually discover

1:09:58

no promises yet. No promises. It might be something that happens. Okay. Well, yeah,

Brandon  1:10:04

you'll get another one eventually. Yeah. Okay. I mean, though.

Collin  1:10:08

The suspense will be worth it, I'm sure.

Brandon  1:10:11
