Collin 0:05

Welcome to Oh Brother, a podcast where we try to figure it all out with your hosts Brandon and Collin on this week's show, BYO Puzzle. Ahoy!

Speaker 1 0:19

Ahoy! How's

Collin 0:21

it going? Ah, it's

Brandon 0:22

fine. How are you? I

Collin 0:24

am, I am well. Sorry, I was about to be on time, right? I was, I was fine on time. It's fine. And then you mean, Collin? What? You mean you are on time? I am on time. Exactly. It's fine. Yes. Yes. Certainly, I certainly wasn't delayed because I put down my coffee cup, and I couldn't find it. And I was running around trying to find where I put it. Collin, a host

Brandon 0:46

arrives precisely when he needs to. I think, I think that's how it works.

Collin 0:53

Oh my gosh! I know I felt so. It's just like I even asked Brandon if he's gonna if this works, and I'm I'm the one. I play

Brandon 1:06

kind of thing a lot, so it's

Collin 1:07

faffing, literally faffing about like where where is this? Fine. So anyway, so I am I am in in the my another location currently. I don't want to you know can't give too much opsec you know that's with oh you know yeah stealth mode right AI AI these days which I learned by the way I okay so I did I did over here I did try and do look. I did try and do something just a little creepy. Oh my! Okay. Okay. So I look. Okay. When all I was trying to do, Brandon. I just, I just wanted like a little like one pager, you know, about like each client that I serve. I just wanted to know like any public facing information. Oh, this is not them. I wasn't, I wasn't looking for like you know compromising photos of them leaving a casino or something. I just don't know his

Speaker 1 2:26

house, right? Like

Collin 2:28

you Google this person's name, what happens? You know, and then put write that down for me. Oh boy!

Speaker 1 2:35

Oh no! That's kind of weird.

Collin 2:37

Just trying to figure out. Like I don't know these people, and I don't you know it takes a long time to Google. So I thought, well, maybe I can just ask. And the little AI bot was like, I can't look up a bunch of people for you on the internet. Yeah, how about the wrong

Brandon 3:00

AI? You didn't ask Elon's boss. Heck yeah, brother, let's go. Broke would have been

Speaker 2 3:05

like, here's a picture. We found this. Here's even their fifth birthday party. Like I've hacked into their bank

Collin 3:11

account how much you want. Yeah, right. Oh my gosh. So no, I wasn't able to do that. So I don't have a dossier on all of my clients right now. Probably for the

Brandon 3:24

best, right? I feel like that's not super nice. You said about their dog. You said about their pets, Collin. You need to try dossier.

Collin 3:32

I was trying to build out like a like a better client avatar thing, you know, and like to note. So I just have to like ask questions now, you know. Okay.

Speaker 2 3:45

Yes. Thank you. Thank you. That's very good.

Collin 3:49

Oh man.

Brandon 3:51

Ah, jeez. Well, Collin. Speaking of human interaction, today I had to attend a conference that should have been an email. That really is the difference. Yeah, it was

Speaker 2 4:09

pretty bad.

Collin 4:10

Oh no!

Brandon 4:14

Like there. All right. So the the frustrating part about this is there is a kernel of an idea here, right? But it seems that nobody really knows in what direction to take this idea, right? That's kind of what it felt like today. So here's the big reveal. Okay, we have rejoined like a more like our school switched like conferences, right? Like sporting conferencing or whatever, and we were in one. I I don't remember why, but a lot we were in one conference. Well, we were in this conference before, and then we switched to another one for like bigger companies. And more stuff, right? But then that conference sort of like fizzled and dissolved because it's like actually a lot of schools are kind of far away from each other, and it's kind of a silly thing to do. And I don't know why they did in the first place. So we've rejoined the conference with like much more local schools, you know, so you don't have to take bus trips for two hours to go play basketball,

Collin 5:21

you know. You know, like a like a good

Brandon 5:24

idea. Yeah. Anyway, but within the last couple years, when when we were not in this conference, they have decided to have a conference wide PD day, right? What professional development day? So today, all the teachers from all nine schools in the conference went to a central location.

Collin 5:50

No.

Speaker 1 5:52

Yes. No. They did.

Collin 5:55

Why would they do? I

Speaker 2 5:56

was there. Why would

Collin 5:57

they do that? Such well. Again,

Brandon 6:00

there is a, there is a seed of an idea here, right? Like there is something here, but like I said, nobody seems to know what to do about this, right? This is like a good. I mean, it. Like I kind of get what's happening, but like I don't understand the purpose. Okay, so like, okay, why did we need a keynote speaker guy today? You know, I think it's just because big conferences have keynote speakers, right? He didn't really add anything to the experience, at least for me right now. A lot of people seemed like a lot of people I heard like they said out loud that they liked it. Right, they're like weren't. Don't you think that guy was very good? He was very like motivational. You know, like I came from hard times. It was my teachers that were important to me? Unfortunately, he didn't say out loud in a room full of teachers and coaches that his PE coaches were like super important to his life and the greatest people. Which means like every PE coach in this room now just has the biggest head, like of all time. Oh, it's gonna be terrible. You can't be so big. I know, but now there's going to be no living with anyone, right? It's just going to be terrible. But like, so so there was again. This was like he was he was that kind of motivational guy. But

Brandon 7:31

like I was getting the vibe. Maybe it's just me. Actually, I think one of my co teachers was getting the vibe. Like this is the part of the speech where I almost cry, right, to show you how emotional I feel, because there's there's no way that you give this same speech like a billion times at a billion different places and then like tear up still,

Speaker 2 7:52

yeah,

Brandon 7:53

right, like

Collin 7:54

no,

Brandon 7:55

maybe I'm just like cold and emotionalist, right? But like I just don't feel like that's true. Anyway, like it, it was fine. It was he went over his time, right? He didn't have a watch apparently, but like he was a he is a guy from like Southwest Missouri, so like I think that's why he came, and you know it was kind of because you know he was to school nearby, and actually, kind of weirdly, one of his former teachers was like actually in the building, so like, you know, maybe he was getting a little emotional, but but I feel this is just my opinion, and you you tell me as a conference attendee and speaker that there there need there needs to be some kind of limit on the number of times the word I is said, right? Right. You feel that, right? You kind of feel me here, like when you're talking in like generalized terms, and you go, but when you just keep talking about I and my story and me and I did this, blah blah blah. Like, I kind of don't care, right? Like, after a certain point, I'm just like, bro, what? This is just your story. Like, I this doesn't help. This is not useful to me at all. Like, I don't really, especially after like an hour and a half. Like, brother, stop. Like, I don't.

Collin 9:21

Yeah. Um. It. Uh. Yeah. So this is the when you're when you're writing. Uh. Do you say here's what I would have done? Uh. I would just would have used some some we language. You know. Like truthfully. Yeah. Like especially because if if he's just like saying about talking about oh this was

Brandon 9:44

like a very like personal he was talking about like his parents and like ah he were he was a very like at risk child

Collin 9:51

okay right and like

Brandon 9:53

he was overcoming this adversity and like his only stability was his school and like this is like the. So the teacher, like a big thing in like education, right? Like I don't know if you've heard about this before, but like it's like there's a phrase that gets bandied about here and there. It's like know your why,

Collin 10:12

yeah, right? Like the why.

Brandon 10:14

This is like a business thing. I think they stole, but like you know, why do you?

Speaker 1 10:18

Yeah,

Brandon 10:19

you know what motivates you to be a teacher? And right, like everybody knows that it's not the standardized test.

Collin 10:28

Sure,

Brandon 10:28

everybody knows. Even though, like all the rest of your meetings all day, are about that. Like you got 100%

Collin 10:35

of your time is actually like devoted to your

Brandon 10:39

score on the state test, like they also like to slip in the like, you know, what is your why? You know, like what is this? Like you know, what is the reason? Like you know, like the little connections with kids you make is the most important. Like, which is true, right? Obviously, like I'm not, I'm not denouncing that part because like the most important part of my day. Like I don't care about some of that stuff most of the time. But like the fact that like everybody knows that's the important part, but then all the focus is on like what about your test scores though, is kind of weird. Yeah, maybe they were bringing in the speaker guy to like balance it out a little bit. So anyway, speaker guy, fine, whatever, I don't care. Then it was time, Collin, for breakout

Speaker 1 11:30

sessions.

Speaker 2 11:31

Oh yeah, would you do breakout sessions? No,

Brandon 11:34

well, hold on. There was a lot. Okay, so earlier I had been emailed a list of many of many choices, which it was actually quite large. Like it was a staggeringly large number of things. Like you can go to, you know, pay. So we we had two sessions, right? And so we had to like we had to do like first, second, third choice for session one, first, second, third choice for session two. Okay, the problem was that they didn't really communicate if which courses you got accepted into particularly well. Oh no, I didn't really find out until I was getting on the bus this morning where I was even supposed to be going. Oh my gosh! But anyway, one of my sessions got cut a little bit short because motivational speaker guy went over on his time. But I went to it was like I can't remember the exact name. I don't. They were very long official names, but one of them was about like supporting English language learners in the classroom. Okay. Okay. Okay. That's good. That's fine. That's good one. That was a good one. I have a lot of those. You know, neat. The information in the meeting, not like groundbreaking. It was more like a here's a thing to think about as you go back, and then like also here are some other resources that I'm gonna share with you that you can dig through and deal with. Like, okay, that's fine. You know, whatever. And it was like, oh, this lady's in charge of like a big thing, and like they have like monthly meetings. They're just like free, and you just like zoom into them, and like you just anybody can join, and they just like listen and talk and like whatever. So this wasn't like a buy my thing or whatever, but like not like motivational speaker guy. He has a book coming out, by the way. Surprise! So I went to that one, which was which was good, you know. And then I went to a something about behavior in the classroom, right? Just like it was a kind of like a PBIS ish adjacent behaviory thing, like, but that one again. The lady was like, "Oh, have you thought about these things in your classroom? And I was like, "Yes, hey, cool. Like, but are you doing this though? And I was like, yes, like you know, like we were talking at our little table. I was like, you know, we don't have like big like the only like for the majority of the time, like as a teacher, like the most annoying thing in your whole entire life is like incestuous like random tapping noises, and like kids that just like shout out things all the time. Like nothing, like nothing like horribly bad. It's just like would you quit, right? Like that's that's the majority of your life. It's like not. It's not like horrible. I mean, there is that sometimes, right? Obviously, but like the majority of things is not like terrible, like egregious, like disruptive behaviors. It's just like kids won't stop talking.

Speaker 1 14:57

Sure. And

Brandon 14:57

so, like you know, there are like you have to know like. What to do about that, but like you know, so it was fine. I did steal the. I did the the. I'm glad I went to that one though because I ran off with. I mean, you could take them, so I didn't actually steal it. But like, I took the. She had this like matrixy looking thing that was like just kind of how she thinks about stuff. So it was like these are your like level one behaviors, and this is like some examples, and then this is like some possible interventions, you know. And these are like level ones are like people being too loud, so it's like you just go stand nearer to them, so they feel your presence, you know, like that. Like yeah, yeah. And then like you know, do I like? How do I document this? Well, like level ones, you just don't write that down. You suck on whatever. And then like level two is like, okay, I start keeping notes about these behaviors. And then like level threes are like, okay, this is where I start like contacting the off. You know what I mean? Like that kind of stuff. So I did steal that because this is a thing that I think I talked to the my sixth grade peers and was like, "Hey, I got this paper, because this is a thing like we like talk about to be consistent within each other's like with our classes, so that like it's similar to like everything, you know, all the time. And I was like, "Well, I took this paper so we could like write it down. Yeah, and she one of the ladies was like, "Wow, an actually useful thing! Imagine,

Collin 16:26

yeah, that's something helpful.

Brandon 16:30

And then it was lunchtime, and then Collin, it really just went off the rails, and like that stuff was like fine. I could have been in a video, but after lunch, I did not really need to be present for anything that transpired at all. We had done more breakout time for departmental meetings. So I went into a room with every science teacher in the conference, and that was the most useless time. Like there's like sad like I don't like as a new person to this like event, like I didn't even really know what this part was for. Like, what are we, what are we doing here? And like nobody had an answer for that. Like nobody could like tell me what we were there for. And like every room was supposed to have like a facilitator person and an administrator, right? Well, our facilitator person was like sick, and so they didn't come, and then or something, they didn't show up. I don't know why.

Collin 17:50

Nice.

Brandon 17:51

And the admin guy was also from one of the new districts to the conference, so like he didn't really know what was going on? He was like, "This is my first time here, also. So, like,

Collin 18:07

sweet.

Brandon 18:08

What are we doing? Yeah, he was looking

Collin 18:09

for some help and guidance.

Brandon 18:13

Yeah, and I couldn't give it. You know, I don't know what I'm doing. I don't know. I don't do this. Yeah, and other people that were there, they didn't know either. Like they just they all they said was like, "Well, you know, we just want to share. Like, we want to talk about like what do you guys do for lab experiments? And I was like, "Dude, you just Google that. Like I don't know what to tell you about that one. Like that one's just like a oh hey I have an idea I'm gonna do this like that's not like sometimes it's difficult to be like oh I need to find one that fits this subject but like it's a findable thing and they were talking about like yeah well we want to know like what is your how do you like they did bring up an interesting question about like budgets and like how do you do experiments with like no budget, but I was also like, guys, do you not dumpster dive? Like, what are you doing? Maybe not every school has a giant bin. Our school has a giant dumpster. Yeah, that they put the cardboard in from the cafeteria, and it's always full. And I always steal boxes from it and cut it up into smaller pieces to make projects.

Collin 19:40

But this is yeah. This I see. What you're describing is the this phenomenon that happens across where there are answers out there, but people they don't even want to go through the burden of googling. They just want someone to tell them what to do. I I encounter this. This is the

Brandon 20:08

vibe I got, right? Like

Collin 20:09

all the time.

Brandon 20:11

Go ahead. Yeah. Like I. So all we all we accomplish in this meeting, we're also supposed to have wait for it quarterly Zoom calls with each other.

Collin 20:22

No, I think right. Yeah, it sounds terrible. I think you may miss those.

Brandon 20:26

Yeah, I know because all we managed to accomplish today, like the big thing we managed to accomplish today, was to decide what we wanted to talk about in the Zoom calls later. And I was like thinking to myself, I was like, bro, we're here right now. Why don't we just why don't we just talk about it now?

Collin 20:46

We could just do this now, people. No, no, Brandon, because they need to make sure they're wasting time later as well. It's a yes and like

Brandon 20:55

yeah. I don't know, man. Like I'm like I did ask like why because they were like, "Well, what time? And they're they were like, "Well, last year we did all of our Zoom calls at like 8o'clock. And I was like, "Brother, school starts at 815. What do you mean to 8o'clock? And I said, "Is there a reason this can't happen after school? And of course,

Collin 21:15

well,

Brandon 21:15

I got the answer I was expecting, but it was like, "Well, yeah, we got too many like coaches, and I was like, "It's four times a year. You can't find one day when a coach doesn't have something to do after school for 30 minutes. You got to take up potentially my class time. Like, yep, yep. Is instructional time important or not? Like, this is what you decide right now. Is instructional time important? Do you do you do it in the middle of the day, like during class time, or do you do it after school and maybe basketball coach guy can't come? Like, what do you do about that? Like, that's ridiculous, you know. So I was grumpy, but you know, I was talking to the other one of the other science teachers from our school, and I was like, you know what? I I felt the same, like what you were just talking about. Like this, that felt like a lot of people, you know, they want to, like I felt like they wanted, like some collaborative action, but what they wanted was just like to hear what I do in my class, and by me sharing anything that I do in my class, I'm not getting anything out of that.

Speaker 1 22:25

Yeah,

Brandon 22:27

and so like I don't like the spirit of collaboration doesn't really sound like it was there all the way because it was like, oh, well, what do you do in your class? Like, well, I don't really want to tell you because I like part of it is like this weird, like you know, it's like slightly prideful, I guess, because I'm like, well, I did this myself. Like, I put in all this work to do all this stuff, and you now use something to tell you all about it. No, like I, trade secrets, bro. Like, get out. Like, I don't know.

Collin 23:01

It's this, Brandon. It's seriously. It's this. You already have an answer. I don't want to be bothered to go even Google this or go look this up in a book or textbook or somewhere. Why don't you? Why can't you just tell me? Why can't I? Oh, it makes me so angry. So I and then and

Brandon 23:25

then they just wanted to talk about Math and Science Day, which is a thing that, from what I understand, sixth graders don't do. So I don't care about Math and Science Day. Like whatever, I'm out. Well, and it sounded like I don't know. I don't know. The way they were describing it didn't sound that awesome, right? Like, there part of it is like knowledge bowl. Okay, cool. That's fine, right? Competition, knowledge bowl thing. Sure. But then, like another part was like it. It was kind of cool because it was like, like again, the idea was neat, but like it was like, oh, they have to do like a some sort of STEM challenge within a time limit, but it's like a contest.

Collin 24:07

Yeah,

Brandon 24:08

but like they're not contest worthy. And again, part of that is like budgetary reasons. Like you know, you can't, you know, to do really cool stuff. You guys spend like a bunch of money to have it,

Collin 24:23

yeah. But like,

Brandon 24:24

or just I mean, sometimes with those things, like if you're gonna do the similar challenges all the time, like you need to get it once, and then it's in there. But like you know, they're like, oh, we do the paper tower building thing, and I was like, at your contest, you do the paper tower at your contest. The thing that I do on days when we have assemblies, and you don't want to teach the rest of classes because you're going to be all messed up. Like that's what you do for your contest. They're like, oh, the like aluminum foil boat. I was like, the thing I do with the kid, like these are some of the things I do for like fun, like whenever like we have like sometimes we do like a map reward like field trip, right? It's like all the kids that like did really good on the map test go on this field trip,

Collin 25:21

yeah,

Brandon 25:21

and so I stay back with the kids that don't get to go because they didn't score high enough. But I don't want them to be punished by staying in school and having to like go to a room and sit all day because that sounds dumb. So like I stay and we do like crazy science stuff, right? It's like you know, like, and they're just those little things, like oh, the paper tower and like the aluminum foil boat, because that costs like five cents, you know, because you just get the cheapest aluminum foil possible, and that actually makes it even more challenging because the foil sucks, and like

Collin 26:00

Yeah, structural integrity challenge,

Brandon 26:03

baby. Build this in, and yeah, you just give them a limited amount of things and a short time limit, and go go, haha! It's fun, right? Like it's like this is not a contest, though. Like I don't. There's not like engineering here. Like we need more stuff, but I'm not gonna say they're all whatever. I don't know. I'm new guy. I don't know. Yeah, yeah.

Collin 26:25

You things.

Brandon 26:28

Yeah. So like, that was wacky. I don't know. That part did not need to happen. Like, that was so pointless and boring that I didn't even know what to do, and then it was time to go, and we ran away. Like that after lunch part, that was so. I was like, "Oh my gosh, this is terrible! I don't understand what I'm here for.

Collin 26:58

Yeah,

Speaker 1 26:59

I'm just

Brandon 27:00

hot in this room, and like I don't know what I'm doing. Like again, the more again, but like there's a there's an idea here somewhere, right? Like there, this whole thing like could be much more interesting, right? Like if there was like some way to like foster the actual collaboration, like okay, like do you know I don't know what like that looks like, but like what you know at least like share more about like because they were just like oh I teach eighth grade science I'm like cool but like Which part, though? Like, because you know, like the Missouri Learning Standards are so wonderfully written that the science standards are-they just say six through eight, and then there's just like a billion of them, right? And it's just like any of these could be on the eighth grade math test. Get them all done before eighth grade, ha! Like that's the vibe, right? Like all you have to do all this stuff before eighth grade, right? So when you're like, "Oh, I teach seventh grade science, it's like, but like, what do you teach? Like, what is your science genre, if you will? Like, you know what I mean? Like, are you doing the physical science part? Are you doing the life science bit? Are you focusing on biology? Are you focusing on like? Because, like I said before, like I took like when we were doing this like a long time ago, I told them I was like, I will take this giant block of Earth Science standards because I like Earth Science, and the other lady was like, Sweet, I don't like that part very much. I was like, Okay, done, boom. So like all these, I'm just, you know, like that's just what I took. I'm like, I'm doing this giant block here, Kabam. So like, meh. But they just were like, "Oh yeah, I teach. They like just introduce your grade level, and I was like, "That's not helpful. Like, you don't want to know about my. I mean, they do want to know about my sweet thermodynamic stuff, but I'm not gonna tell them because I want to. Like, I don't know.

Collin 29:20

Yeah, figure it out.

Brandon 29:23

I'm not making you a copy of my convection current anchor chart. Okay, I'm get back. So

Collin 29:28

answer my riddles three, and then we'll talk.

Brandon 29:32

Yeah. So like, I felt like it was. It kind of started off wonkily because there was like not a lot of communication about the plan. Turns out like nobody really knows what the plan is anyway, but like

Collin 29:43

yeah,

Brandon 29:44

but it just was kind of it's very frustrating because I was like there is an idea here, but I just don't think it's being executed particularly well.

Collin 29:57

Yes, I like the idea. Of getting people together for like like okay, all these people are doing somewhat of the same things. Yeah, Roger. Okay. Yeah. Do they have structure and context within which to discuss those?

Speaker 1 30:16

No. Or

Collin 30:16

are they just going to be staring at each other in the in the face?

Brandon 30:20

Yeah, it was that one.

Collin 30:21

Yeah, it was just like in a room. Definitely that one. I

Brandon 30:25

mean, it didn't help. Like, there were facilitator questions, but like again, our facilitator wasn't there, and the internet wasn't working for all the guests in the building. Because like, you know, when you try to log in that many people on the guest network, it's kind of like the guest network and stuff like that is just built for like a couple people. Like the bandwidth is not strong with that one, right? Like

Speaker 1 30:46

all the

Brandon 30:47

power goes to the main hub network, and so if you're trying to log into the guest, it's not, it's not going to work,

Speaker 1 30:54

right? And

Brandon 30:54

so the the the there's too much traffic for the bandwidth, and so like that we're having trouble getting on there, and like nobody knew where the things were. So like, but it's from what the ones they found, like they they weren't really like poignant, right? They were like, oh, that's a question, I guess. But like that's not really telling us like what do we want out of this? Like what's the point? I I should have just asked the admin guys, like, okay, so as the principal, as a principal, what do you hope your teachers take away from this, right? Like,

Speaker 2 31:28

what were you hoping to get? Look

Collin 31:31

at you! I oh, this is my problem. Like,

Brandon 31:35

I know, like, this is my big problem. Like, I am too, like, I don't want to do this stuff. I don't like these roles and like taking over discussions, but I'm so extroverted that I can't like contain it. And I'm just like, I like can't hold back at some point, and I'm just like,

Collin 31:58

like I don't want it. This is this is where Megan has described me as like the consummate void filler of if there is a vacuum or void in any dynamic, I will be the one to fill it. Of like, I know that person asked the question and started this, but nobody's doing anything, and not even them. So I don't

Brandon 32:19

want to be that guy because, like, number one, like I have no idea what's happening. No, no. I mean, like I'm a new person to this whole shebang. Like, what am I doing? Like, I don't know. Like, I don't know why we're here. I don't know what you guys want to talk about. There's like four or five schools that were here and have done this before. Like, what did you guys do? Like, what is happening? And they're just like, "Oh yeah, we just talked about lab experiments. I was like, "Guys, like, that's so short-sighted. Like, I don't know. I mean, that's a part of doing science, right? Like, you-that's the hands-ony bit, but like, you know, you don't have to just like do a lab, right? Like you can do other things. You can do like cool demonstrations, like you know.

Collin 33:17

How would that even work? What do you mean? Blowing my mind! I

Brandon 33:22

know. Like I just did a dumb one. Like okay, do you want to know? Okay, Collin, here we go. Here is my mind-bendingly revolutionary convection thing. Right? Okay, you ready? I took a hot plate and I put a glass beaker on it, and I turned it on. Filled it with water.

Collin 33:45

Oh, oh!

Brandon 33:46

Turned on. This is another thing. If you do a lot of experiments with water,

Collin 33:50

you got

Brandon 33:51

that. It's in the sink. Just got it. Yeah, just right there. And then, as we're talking about convection currents in the mantle and how they move the tectonic plates. I took little ripped up piece of paper, and I dropped them in the water, and they moved. Wow!

Brandon 34:13

Bang! Bang! Look at that! Because rising heat energy smashes into the bottom of it and moves them around. No way!

Speaker 1 34:21

It's a small scale model for the

Brandon 34:23

mantle of the earth.

Collin 34:24

Right? Like, doesn't it sound like that's actually working?

Brandon 34:28

Yeah, but like the thing that I don't understand and I don't know how to like convey to people is like at like as a content teacher, right? Like it is like hyper important that like you know what the heck you're talking about.

Collin 34:45

Yeah, you

Brandon 34:45

know what I mean. So like, you can do that experiment, but if you don't know what it means, then like, what's the point? Like nobody's gonna learn anything. You know what I mean? You can't just like do it or show them and like not say anything, or even if you're doing a lab, like if you're doing an experiment, like you have to tell them like what it's for and what they're learning from it, you know, or like they have to know what they're getting out of it, like what's the goal, and so you can't just be like, oh, do this lab, like, Like what?

Collin 35:21

Well, that requires them knowing what it's supposed to be as well. And whenever all of you, all you did was at turn to your buddy at the table and go, "What do you do to fill your time? and they say, "I do this. You go, "Cool, I'll do that too. They have put no thought. They have no idea what. No, no, why? How? Like again,

Brandon 35:41

I didn't get a good gage of these people. I'm not despair. I'm trying to. Don't get to. I'm not like disparaging them. I'll do that for you. I spent like 20 minutes with them, so I don't know. But like, if it was longer than that, but it felt like ages. But sure, like if this is the mindset in the meeting, like how can I explain to them the science side quest, right? Like how how does that work? Like I tried to explain this to like a curriculum coach developer, and she was confuzzled as all heck by me explaining the point of this, and she was like, "What? I was like, "No, no, listen, listen. It's totally fine. Yes, we're just working on engineering standards on a small scale over a long period of time in a contest format. And she was like, "That's interesting, and I was like, "No, it's great. Listen, like, yeah, it's weird. I don't know. I don't know. So that that was the that was my day today. It was a plan. It was something. Let's see other things I did this week. We're gonna get off this because I've I've taken up so much time ranting about this. Oh, I did. We there was more running this week.

Collin 37:10

Oh yes.

Brandon 37:12

So on Saturday we watched Lily run, right?

Collin 37:16

Did

Brandon 37:16

but Tuesday in the glaring heat. was the local cross country race.

Collin 37:26

Yeah,

Brandon 37:27

so this is why we couldn't record Tuesday because they pushed back the start times because it was so hot, and then when they ran, it was still so hot. It

Collin 37:39

was hot. It was hot all day. It was not a good day to be doing it. Was

Brandon 37:43

it like the only time that it would not have been hot enough to run would be like 8o'clock in the morning?

Speaker 1 37:51

Yeah,

Brandon 37:52

because even at like 630, 7o'clock, it was still like 97 degrees, And so, like, I went to cheer them on, but oh my god! Like, well, I was talking to one of the girls that's in seventh grade now that I had last year, and she is normally like a high, high finisher, and she finished like much lower than she normally does. But I was like, "Yo, it's impressive that you finish, and she was like, "Right, I was dying. I was like, "I didn't think I was gonna make it.

Collin 38:28

Oh no!

Brandon 38:30

Was so hot. These kids were roasting.

Collin 38:35

And how long was there? How long do they run for? Okay,

Brandon 38:40

so the middle this race I learned I didn't know I didn't know that so the the high school runs the it's like a 5k 3.1 miles right, but apparently for middle school it's like how far are you gonna run? It could be anywhere between one and a half or two miles, somewhere in there.

Collin 39:09

So it's just kind of like dealer's choice. Whoever you can stop. It depends on

Brandon 39:13

like every course is different. So like the week before,

Collin 39:17

this

Brandon 39:17

is at their meet. They ran like 1.6.

Collin 39:20

I don't understand, right? And

Brandon 39:22

then I think, well, I think it's just how the course is laid out and designed, right? Like where it is, and how they can like what part can they lop off to like, you know what I mean? Because it's like our local one, it's like one big course, but like when the when the little when the junior high runs, it's like they don't go over there, you know. You don't go that loop over there. They chop that off.

Collin 39:48

Yeah. So they design

Brandon 39:50

the course around the 3.1, and then it's like, where do you cut off for the junior high kids?

Collin 39:58

Sure.

Brandon 39:58

Right. So like the. When they ran here, it's like 1.8, like so. Okay, so it's kind of like a yeah, it's a surprise. Like, how far are you gonna run this week? We don't know.

Collin 40:15

Surprise.

Brandon 40:16

Yeah, and of course the classic cross country conundrum of how hilly is this course? Like the one last week, very flat, right? The one here, so hilly. Oh my gosh, it's awful.

Collin 40:33

Yeah,

Brandon 40:33

it's brutal. And so, like, there was that. It was like even hotter. It's a little bit longer and it's hillier. And so their times were like worst, but you know, like

Collin 40:44

hey, you know what? You got to understand your course, and that's where you yeah, yeah. And I was talking to a coach

Brandon 40:49

too, and I was like, yo, for the heat that these guys were running in, yeah, they did good, and she was like, oh yeah, it was they did great because holy, like we,

Collin 41:00

yeah,

Brandon 41:01

you know she hasn't been doing practice every in the morning. Cause ew, no, like we're not doing that.

Collin 41:09

Nobody wants that in their life. I agree,

Brandon 41:12

absolutely not. So she was like, yeah, for for just going out in the heat and ripping this on the on the like second or third meet, and the first one with major hills, like they did pretty good, you know, like it's all right, like

Collin 41:26

that's like that's for

Brandon 41:28

for sure, like I, you know, it's like man, I I think they did good for this weather. It was so hot, the ground, and plus one is it's been so hot for so long, and like it hasn't really rained here, like it's rained like a bit here and there, but like it's just been like, so the ground is so hard, right? So when you're running like that, and it's just like it's just like asphalt, right? Just that's got tear your feet up too, like your legs, like just hard ground forever, back by just like

Collin 41:59

pounding. Yeah,

Speaker 1 42:00

yeah, that's gotta be tough. So, so that's it. Yeah, so that's fantastic. Yeah,

Collin 42:08

what else I

Brandon 42:09

do? Oh, oh, right, right, right. Of course, take all right. So, so after, after, after Saturday, right? Go, we go. Saw you hung out, did things, cheered, yippee,

Collin 42:18

woohoo!

Brandon 42:18

Right, we did have to run some errands, right? I did accidentally. I don't know how I got there. Blacked out, and I I woke up in a hobby store.

Collin 42:27

Oh, okay, right.

Brandon 42:30

You know, totally on accident. Don't know how I got there. I gotta say, haven't been to one of those in a long time, right? But it was pretty cool in there. Yeah, right. So I went to Hobby Town hashtag not sponsored. It's right across from Barnes and Noble, over there. Weirdly, by Hobby Lobby, but I don't think they're affiliated. I don't know. That's kind of weird. Anyway, yeah, don't know question mark. So I was really wanted to check it out, and they have like a ton of things in there, like they have a a a like a RC car track in that building.

Speaker 2 43:18

Whoa,

Brandon 43:19

yeah, that like people races on. So I don't know if that's like a if they have. I didn't see. I didn't go over to that part really. I looked at the track, but like they had all that stuff. Like over there, like there was a guy that like brought in a thing and he was like tooting up a car and like driving around

Collin 43:39

there. Wow,

Brandon 43:41

they had like people just like hanging out at all these tables, like working puzzles. I don't know, like I don't know if they bought the puzzle. I don't know how this works. Like logistically, do you buy the puzzle here? Is there a rack of puzzles to choose from? Do you BYO puzzle? Like I don't know what, like so that was cool, right? They did have, I scoped it out a little bit. They do have a kind of small model train section over on the side, right? They got the kind of stuff over there, right? Oh, oh, and oh, did they have Gunda models in the front build? Oh yeah, they did. Yeah, no, surely not. Yeah, stumbled

Collin 44:25

right into those.

Brandon 44:26

Stumbled right into this. So I want to report to you, Collin. I attempted a more complicated one this week. Right. This is Brandon tries real grade Gundaming. Holy schmoly! The engineering on this thing is insane.

Speaker 1 44:48

Oh,

Brandon 44:51

there are 50 million pieces in this. I finished it today. Right, like I got it last week, like a week ago. Now I haven't. I didn't work on it. Like, yeah. Well, I mean, I did like just a little bit every day. But like some of the pieces are so small that it's like, okay, I'm gonna stop now because I can't see straight. Yeah. Like this is. Oh no. Oh no! In the past two days, have been spent in small increments of time putting on the smallest stickers you have ever seen in your entire life.

Collin 45:32

Oh, I can imagine that really frustrating. Did you have to break out any tweezers to put them on? Oh yeah,

Brandon 45:38

for sure. The problem I have is I have the tweezers, right? But I don't know. I haven't discovered the so like you have the tweezers and you hold the sticker, but then you put the sticker down on the thing, but then the sticker sticks to the tweezers.

Collin 45:52

Yes.

Brandon 45:53

And so you need another thing that's small to like hold the sticker to to like slide the tweezer off the stickiness, right? And I have not discovered the best second thing to use.

Collin 46:10

Yeah, yeah, and then you just run out of things that are sticking to sticking to sticking things. Yeah, and so

Brandon 46:16

like I I tried like a pencil eraser, and that works for some things, but then like some of the other stickers are so tiny that they're like under the pencil eraser, and so like I need a finer point thing, but it can't be pointy because then it like can mess up the sticker.

Collin 46:37

It can tear and store it. Has to be like,

Brandon 46:39

and some of the stickers are like chrome-ish because they're supposed to be like, oh, this is like a metal exposed piece. So like, if it's, I tried using a bit. I one of them I used the end of like the like the little hobby knife thing, but like it's too pointy and it kind of like scuffs up the sticker. Like you can't tell, but like it like it's not. It's too pointy, and so like I need something that is like small and like rounded, like like a pencil, but not a pencil because I don't want it to mark on there. So like, I this is very this is very tricky to figure out what I was just looking around my room like what the heck do I do?

Collin 47:18

It's channeling your inner MacGyver to be like find me a utensil. I need an I need a

Brandon 47:25

pencil. I need something like a pencil, but not a pencil, right? This is where I'm at. This is what I've decided, and I don't have anything that fits that criteria.

Collin 47:37

Yes. Oh no. And so,

Brandon 47:39

because like I want it to be like rounded, so that you can like put it on there,

Collin 47:45

and

Brandon 47:45

and like it won't like scuff up or scratch anything.

Collin 47:47

Like roll it off easily. Yeah. Right. Yeah. Yeah. And

Brandon 47:50

then and you can also use like because you you have to like like you need something to depress against one edge of the sticker so that it affixes to the plastic, so that you can then you like press and hold it, because the stickers are so they stick to the tweezers like really good.

Collin 48:08

So you have tension to to pull off. Yeah, because

Brandon 48:11

you can't just stick the sticker on there and then pull the tweezer off because it doesn't work. Right. Right. Like for the longer ones, you can like use your finger, you know. Sure. Or whatever. But like some of the like super mega tiny ones, like you can't put your finger on that. I have fat fingers, man. That'll never work. So like, yeah, I am in search of some sort of tool around here that I could use for this. Like this is my new quest, so like I have to figure out what that thing is that I need, because like on the other ones, like the high grade ones, like it's not that big a deal. Like there are some stickers, but like they're small. But compared to what I have just done, they are totally not that bad. Holy, it's actually pretty okay. Yeah, I'll see if I can send you an up close picture after we're done with this, so you can just see what on earth I'm dealing with. But like, oh my gosh, like holy cow, this is

Collin 49:14

oh no

Brandon 49:16

tiny stuff.

Collin 49:18

Well, you know, but that's the detail people love with those things, and they love. I know, I know. It

Brandon 49:23

looks good. It looks yeah. That's the problem. It looks real good. Does look really good. I didn't know. I was questioning, like, do I even want to do this? But then I was like, I just do it, and it like it does. Like the best way I can describe this is it gives it more like a very. It's like very like fighter jet quality, right? There's like stickers and labels, and like that's what it looks like, right? It looks like things and stuff like that, like you know, like just things are just like painted on, like oh, this is this housing, like blah blah blah. Like you can't read any of it, but like that's kind of what the vibe that it gives is like very like that. So I was like, okay, looks kind of cool. But then, like after I did half of them, was like, "This looks pretty good. Now I have to the other half, though. Right?

Collin 50:09

Yep. Because now you can't not. You're kind of committed there.

Brandon 50:13

It's all or nothing. Once you start, you gotta go. You gotta finish it because, like, you can't just put on like parts of it. That would look weird. Not quitter.

Collin 50:24

Not a quitter.

Brandon 50:26

Yeah, I'm just a. I'm gonna do this over the course of several days because my eyes hurt. Like I'm

Collin 50:32

tired of this.

Brandon 50:34

Yeah. Like I had to bust out some like some of those are so small, legitimately. I was like, "Oh, we have some reading glasses around here somewhere. I'm gonna put those on, like just magnifying glass, right? Like, aha, yeah, there we go. I need to look at this teeny, teeny tiny thing.

Collin 50:56

No,

Brandon 50:57

and try to get it in this little exact spot without. a tool that I think I need, but I don't know what it is. Like that's what I got.

Speaker 1 51:11

Oh man! So that's the other thing I was up to this week is Gundam modeling. I love it. Bang.

Collin 51:26

I love this. I love what's really

Brandon 51:33

weird about this. Like sometimes I'm like, man, I don't know what I'm gonna talk about for this amount of time,

Collin 51:37

right? And I look at our

Brandon 51:38

record time. I'm like, oh, okay, never mind.

Collin 51:42

Hold on, everyone, just put a pin in this. What's going on right now? Yeah, like I

Brandon 51:49

just think I'm talking. Like I've got, I, I want to talk about this, but I don't know how long that'll take. No, I don't know. And I worry, like, oh man, I won't have enough talk about it. And then I look at our runtime. I'm like, oh no, never mind. Okay.

Collin 52:02

No, no. Literally, literally say my my week was pretty laid back. For once, we're kind of getting into a little bit of a of a groove. Okay. We we celebrated the last day of the the the pool being open in our town because it's cold. So everyone, we we mourned that, and then it's been like another hottest week ever, and I'm like, ugh, I could really go for the pool right now. Only the pool was still open. Only I would have some place to go when it's 105. Yeah, Right curses. Yeah, who

Speaker 2 52:43

closed this? Whose idea was this?

Collin 52:45

I know, I know. Oh gosh, but we oh oh oh yes, we celebrated Cinnamon's Gotcha Day. All right. Yes, we've officially had her for two years. Yo, celebrated this week, so that was a. We all took some time to share of our favorite memories of cinnamon. She loves to in the mornings when I am asleep and or waking up because my children wake up well before us. Yes, as is yes. yes known, just it just happens. Cinnamon gets released from her kennel. Usually, we'll go outside right away, use the bathroom, and then on the way back in, she will get fed. It's the after the feeding. All of this has happened before I've left my bed. Okay, okay, people, it is it is usually about this time, 635 in the morning, and all of that has taken place. Which means the person, my daughter, has gotten up, brushed her hair, gotten dressed, gotten ready for the day. Usually, is making herself breakfast while getting the dog out and ready. It's when the dog is done with its thing, will then run and find me wherever I am, asleep in bed, and then jump in bed and attack me. Find my-I'm the only one that she does this to, where she finds my fingers, and we have a good old-fashioned gnaw my my fingers to the bones and wrench flesh from my hand. Good old battle every morning, which she just oh she loves so much, so oh

Brandon 54:26

yes, I can tell that you love it also.

Collin 54:30

No, it's just my favorite thing ever. But the kids get a kick out of it, so it's fine. And I may or may not play it up quite a bit. No, you would never would never make something shrieking and pretend pain. No, no shrieking happens here. No, none of that here. We don't do shenanigans. Oh, of course not. No, ever.

Collin 54:56

Oh, oh. So we did. We we celebrated that. And then I went to gosh, just not fun stuff. Went to a networking event and talked to a guy who his name is his name is Ken. Ken's great. I I've known Ken for a little while, but he was talking to me, and he dropped this phrase. And Brandon, I have no context for this at all, I just need you to hear. I just need everyone to be fully aware that I'm talking to this man. I know him in a professional setting. That's it. Like I know outside context. I don't even really know what his job is. It's just one of those like, hey, you. I I caught Ken on a on a down day because we're talking, and he goes, man, I'm just, I'm just really tired, you know, Collin. I just don't have that energy anymore. And so many things have flashed before my eyes, Brandon. I was just like, I was like, wait a minute, wait, like I didn't ask any questions because I just, you know, I just don't care. Yeah, it's like no, wait, wait. Is that something that like, is this a is this a Ken in the third person? Like, Ken is very tired today. Ken is just really struggling. Is this a third person conversation, or is this one of those things where like he's been in the work his same workplace for so long that this is one of those like it's

Brandon 56:22

like an inside thing, inside joke thing that is that is

Collin 56:26

busting out. That you know, Ken's always known as the go getter, and he's got the energy.

Brandon 56:32

Yeah, I mean, to be fair, that's pretty good, right? Like that's pretty fun, right? Real good.

Collin 56:39

It's real good. Yeah,

Brandon 56:42

I'm not mad at that. I'm not mad at Kennergy. I am not

Collin 56:46

mad at this at all. I'm just-it's just he said it like I had a lot of context and understanding behind that phrase, and like like I was aware of something

Speaker 2 56:54

to you, right? Yes.

Collin 56:56

Yeah. I'm like, oh, same. Oh wow! But I just like there is so much of a backstory here, and I, man, I really love this a lot. So I was, I was both confused, but also in awe of this because he just like dropped it and then like walked away. I was like, okay, okay, you know what? Energy,

Collin 57:23

energy. I, I don't. My name is not Ken, but I think I'm going to start using this to describe people who have high energy that they've just got a lot of Kenergy.

Brandon 57:37

Man, that's pretty good.

Collin 57:39

Oh, damn. Damn, yeah. So I'm adding that to my pretty

Brandon 57:45

hard to be mad at Kittery, right? Like I just can't do it.

Collin 57:48

I know, I know. I was like, "Dang it! I actually really like that a lot.

Brandon 57:54

So good, man. Holy.

Collin 57:56

Oh, so yeah. When I did that. That whole that networking thing was all about. They were talking about using AI in businesses and stuff, and the guy, the presenter was talking, and the presenter was very just straightforward. He was like, "Look, I don't know. I cannot tell you. He's like I have been what his his whole PhD 10 years ago was on people's fears and reluctance of adopting technology. This guy Sean has found his lane. Like this is his

Brandon 58:39

for sure. Like

Collin 58:41

yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So he has found his lane about this, and he's really he was just very honest of like, hey, look, this is the first time in my professional career where I've talked about a technology, and the first thing that people bring up is, is it going to kill me? So he's like, I'm learning a lot, but he's like, I'm not here to talk about the 10% chance that this takes over the world. I'm not here to talk about or like settle any of that. What I am here to talk about is that if you are interested in using this, here's how to use it well and how to actually help you instead of just making it another thing that you need to do. And I was like, okay, like fair. I I can I can embrace this, but as soon as this guy's talking, Sean's talking, and the guy next to me is like, he just mumbles under his breath. I ain't talking to no dang robot. It's like it's like yeah, hey, we'll we'll keep we'll keep it up. Let's just listen, see what's going, what's going to happen.

Brandon 59:43

Yeah, one of our sessions, one of the sessions you could have signed up for today was about that for teaching, right? Oh

Collin 59:49

yeah, like

Brandon 59:50

how to do it in the classroom, but yeah, I'm not calling that one.

Collin 59:54

Look, and again, like this guy said, and he's like, "Hey, I don't have the answers, but if you are wanting." To do this, like we'll talk. So I did listen to that, and I got nothing out of it except he was very big on the like. If it come, if it's got your name on it, you own it. You don't get to because what's happening is people, CEOs, managers, people are putting information out there. They're generating reports. They're doing all this stuff, and then it's coming back wrong and riddled with errors. And they're just throwing up their hands and going, "I don't know. That's what chat said.

Speaker 1 1:00:31

Ah, yes, right.

Collin 1:00:32

Like as if that were a legitimate excuse. Excuse,

Speaker 1 1:00:36

yeah.

Collin 1:00:36

Right. Like,

Brandon 1:00:37

no, no, no. Yeah, you did that. Like, I'm sorry.

Collin 1:00:40

Whose email was this sent from? Yours.

Brandon 1:00:44

Yours, big guy. You own this.

Collin 1:00:46

You own it. I thought that was probably the biggest, like the most important thing that he could have stressed on. Yeah, that's

Brandon 1:00:51

true. That is good. Yeah.

Collin 1:00:53

So many people just want to, you know, faff something together, slop it out, and then be like, "Well, let's move on, and it's like no, like these have real consequences. And if you are making multi-million-dollar decisions, or hiring, or marketing, or something that it's impacting your life or others, you don't get to just be like laws, like like you just you don't. That was he stressed that for a really long time, and he was very upfront too. Whenever he was when he had used AI in certain things, and that's he he has a company who does like teaches about technology and things, and so he you know he was also going, if your company or organization doesn't have a policy on AI disclosure, I suggest you start because there's a lot coming down with like lawsuits and all sorts of stuff, and it's yeah. So he's like, you should probably have that anyway. It was. It makes

Brandon 1:01:59

sense though, you know, it makes

Speaker 1 1:02:00

sense. That's good. Yeah,

Collin 1:02:02

it does. And then today, I went on a three-hour adventure hike and burned to a crisp. I was gonna say, oh my

Speaker 2 1:02:10

gosh! Now,

Collin 1:02:11

the hike was scheduled for eight a.m.

Speaker 1 1:02:14

Oh no! So

Collin 1:02:15

that lasted. It was good for about 20 minutes, and then I was like, "This is not good. We were out here. I have three hours. Ah, like, like I could just feel it. Like it was, it was about like 20 minutes. I was going, "What a fall morning! And then the sun rose just like a degree higher. One degree, yeah, degree higher in the sky. And I was like, I'm burning! Oh no! Help me! So we we adapted our hike, and we hike out at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. Oh oh yeah!

Brandon 1:02:52

So much shade. Wait. Well, no parts of it.

Collin 1:02:56

Parts of it. Parts. Oh yeah, I

Brandon 1:02:58

guess the part over there by like where General Lyon died has trees now.

Collin 1:03:03

Yes, trees over there is

Brandon 1:03:05

a what a niche reference that is, ladies and gentlemen. You're welcome.

Collin 1:03:08

Over there by the glade, and where he was, it fell from his horse, which is also first first major

Brandon 1:03:16

general to be killed during the Civil War.

Collin 1:03:18

Yeah, yeah, I think that's and it turns out he didn't actually die there, but that's beside the point. He got shot there. He got shot there. Died in a

Brandon 1:03:26

farmhouse, but like,

Collin 1:03:28

but yes. So there's some shade there. There's some shade down around the river bottom on one of the trails there. So I do all the internal trails. Actually, I don't do other ones

Brandon 1:03:37

through the middle of the field with by the where the house is and Michael's,

Collin 1:03:41

yeah. So I do have to go through a field for a portion of it, but everything else is like in the shade. But also, more more importantly, I need to. There, I had to like. It's like, okay, I'm. It is hot. It's too hot for everybody. I've got water, but so I basically did a clover leaf from the. We have an access point to the river down there where you can get in and wade and pick off. So I'm like, this is my center point. I'm gonna part of my clover. I'm gonna step in. We're gonna go to the river, let them play, run around, get a drink, whatever, and then we're gonna go hike in another loop, and we're gonna come back and we'll go to the river, play, run around hikes.

Brandon 1:04:21

Smart, do that.

Collin 1:04:22

Do another loop. Come back to the river. Like, like these. Like, like here. Here's a 20 minute. Here's a 20 minute. Here's the 20. Like, and then we could sit and rest for like five or 10. And that's just what we did. And it worked out really well. I was like, okay, I this is good. Bookmark

Brandon 1:04:41

that one. Yes,

Collin 1:04:43

lock that one away up in Manugan for this, and then these these are dudes. Oh my gosh, they are two black labs, and they are of the they're hunting lines. And so,

Speaker 1 1:05:00

oh, okay. They

Collin 1:05:01

are like, like high, high energy, high energy, with massive drive. They barely slow down on a three-hour hike.

Brandon 1:05:13

Oh my god!

Collin 1:05:15

Like still in the heat too. In the heat, you know. And I'm like, maybe I, maybe I rested us too much. Maybe I should have pushed on. No, no, no. I was dying. No, you didn't. Yeah, you got arrested yourself. Yeah, I was lay tired. But they were still like pulling towards the car at the very end. I was just like, oh my gosh. But they're just like, and they're one of them is trained, and I always forget this when we do. We do these hikes like just frequently enough for me to

Speaker 2 1:05:44

forget a couple to forget a little bit about.

Collin 1:05:46

Yes, and one of them, one of one of them, is trained to when when when something happens, whatever's going on, she comes back to you on the left side and then loops around behind you to come up on the right side. This is her loop. This she's. This is just what she does. This is her check in. And now this is fine if you are walking in a field and you don't have a leash on the dog.

Speaker 1 1:06:13

Yeah.

Speaker 2 1:06:14

But what happens now is I have the leash

Collin 1:06:18

behind me, slapping in the back of my knees, and the dog pulling hard forward,

Speaker 2 1:06:23

and like

Collin 1:06:24

so, it's it's Collin doing a lot of the like hop, skip, whatever that thing was, where you'd put it on one foot and like swing it around and jump with the other,

Brandon 1:06:34

skip it,

Collin 1:06:35

skip it, right? Or the skip,

Brandon 1:06:36

yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 1:06:38

What is that? That was

Brandon 1:06:39

called. I was just while you talk. Yeah.

Collin 1:06:41

Okay. Yeah. So whatever, like the skip it or hop it or whatever this was. I'm confusing my smack it, bop it, flang it thing. No, it's the

Brandon 1:06:50

skip it. It's the Hasbro skip it. Yes, the Hasbro

Collin 1:06:52

skip it. Yeah. It's like, what if you wanted to jump rope, but

Brandon 1:06:57

you didn't have a didn't have a rope. Didn't have a rope. You needed something. was only one foot at a time too. Yes, it

Collin 1:07:05

was because you had to fix it to one leg and then swing it around and jump. Yes, and there was like a counter on it, right, where you could figure out how many revolutions. Yeah, I would do

Brandon 1:07:16

that. Yeah, yeah,

Collin 1:07:16

which is again, yeah, it was the 90s people. Like this is what we had. So you know, imagine. me, but I'm doing that in hiking boots in 100 degree weather with two black labs. I'm just doing like the skip it every like every like 20 yards, or what I'm having to do because this dog it will not like you cannot stop this dog. I have tried to like, like, look at Arnery, and I'm tired of this loop. And so when the dog comes by on my left, I know it's going to come up over on my right. And so I just take a massive step to the right, and I'm just like, no, you will not. You cannot come over to the right. And the dog does not care. And then it's like,

Speaker 2 1:08:03

ooh, playing yes, yes.

Collin 1:08:04

Now the dog will either like now the dog is racing around me, or like like then it just becomes terrible. So and I'm like going into a bush, but the dog's still trying to go through the bush to come around the right. Like you're not you're not breaking. Well,

Brandon 1:08:18

also labs are big enough that, like, if you try to get in their way, they kind of don't have to care. They just push you, right? Nope, you're sorry. Like, like yeah, labs are big enough to move you. Like they don't care. Like, and again, these are my way. No, yeah,

Collin 1:08:37

and these are hunting breeds, hunting strains. So they're like, okay, fine, I'll go through the bush okay whatever like I'll do it well

Brandon 1:08:43

they're very physical right like they're just

Collin 1:08:46

gonna muscle their way through and that's what this that's what she does and I don't care so I'm either doing the skip it or I'm so when I when I hike when I walk with multiple dogs I put and I don't again I don't get to do this hike very often but whatever when I do, it's fun. I like. I actually. I wanted to do it this day. It just was hot. I didn't want anybody else out there, so I did it. I put both leashes around one wrist. I put the loops. Which okay, if you are listening to this and you are a trainer, yeah, I need you to stop listening right now. Okay, just stop or okay or skip ahead to just understand. Okay, because because trainers will tell you you should never use the hand loop on a leash. The hand loop, right? You're supposed to like hold it and do the thing with your thumb and lock it in and whatever. Yeah, so you

Brandon 1:09:36

can like control the dog, right? Well, and also you're supposed to like for non-invent. I mean, it's an adventure walk. This is a different scenario. Yeah, you're supposed to like choke up way on the leash, right? Like hold it short and like

Collin 1:09:47

yeah,

Brandon 1:09:48

so you can like steer the dog. Yes, and we

Collin 1:09:50

do all of that. But I also train all of my staff. There's a loop on your hand; it goes over your wrist. I like we just train that because dog. Security is. I mean, if you

Brandon 1:10:01

drop, yeah, if you pull, you drop it, right? Like if you fall, catch, bolts.

Collin 1:10:06

This is our first. This is our first point of contact. Is your wrist? Second point of contact is you take the same hand that the wrist is attached to, and you grab the leg, right? And you choke down, and then this way you have your other hand, so that if you need to choke further or steer the dog, you know. Yeah, you could

Brandon 1:10:24

grab it with that. Now you can do

Collin 1:10:26

two-handed leash maneuvers, like we do. So I put both, and when I walk multiple dogs, the loop, both loop leashes, both leashes from. Oh my gosh, both loops from the leash. I do on the same breast.

Speaker 2 1:10:36

Yeah, leash loops. Yeah, yeah.

Collin 1:10:38

So this liberation is hard. This way, my other hand is still free for me to emergency grabs, pull. I've got to take a photo or grab a poop bag, whatever. So what what this entails is this dog is coming around the loop. What I end up just doing is either doing the skip it, or I just take my my left hand and I shove it high above my head, and I twirl so that nice because like unwind yourself like a maple

Speaker 1 1:11:09

exactly. Like

Collin 1:11:11

hand goes up, I turn into it, and we just we just keep keep walking. Now I don't I don't know if you know this or not. I am not like the the most sure afoot person. I have heard

Brandon 1:11:32

that rumor.

Collin 1:11:33

So so this is all like all at my own peril. Yes, yes. And I was going to mention

Brandon 1:11:41

that, but you know it's fine.

Collin 1:11:43

The two maneuvers that I have just laid out sound as if they could be conducted gracefully, and I'm sure. But by somebody, somebody probably could. But guys,

Brandon 1:11:54

you don't know my brother.

Collin 1:12:00

I am gangly. I am oddly proportioned. I'm a little heavy, and I cannot walk in a straight line without rolling my ankles.

Brandon 1:12:11

Listeners, he once fell down walking in a straight line in the mall. Okay,

Collin 1:12:15

so so what this actually looks like he is is a man approaching his 40s. If we're honest, like grunting and grumbling and stumbling around as dogs are twirling around with various colored leashes and on a trail and with deer and bird watchers. Oh, I bet the

Brandon 1:12:42

bird watchers love this. Love me, like oh man, so peaceful. Look at that start.

Collin 1:12:49

Here we go. Holy bump! No, we got her. Because also, I have a running commentary while I'm out on the trail as well, because the dogs and I are having a conversation.

Brandon 1:13:05

Yeah, clearly.

Speaker 1 1:13:07

So you're talking to them.

Brandon 1:13:09

You have to talk to them. That's important.

Collin 1:13:11

It's I'm building bonds and trust. Yeah, familiarity. So I did. I did say hello to some of the Prairie Restoration crew members out there today, and I waved to them from afar. And I well waved or floundered and flailed, flailed about nearly flailed about

Brandon 1:13:31

towards them. Yes,

Collin 1:13:32

that was the best part. They waved because they interpreted

Speaker 2 1:13:35

what you did as a wave. Yes, they

Collin 1:13:37

did, and then me feeling awkward to wave back, which was weird because they thought they had waved. It was yeah, it was a little bit of a lost in

Brandon 1:13:48

flesh. Move on, move on.

Collin 1:13:51

But I did survive. They did end up crashing

Speaker 2 1:13:58

news in the AC of the

Collin 1:13:59

car, And I had to go and and hydrate and stretch afterwards because it was. I

Speaker 1 1:14:07

mean, yeah, it

Collin 1:14:07

was a lot.

Brandon 1:14:08

Get some electrolytes back, like holy, get some. Yes,

Collin 1:14:12

yep, yep, yep, yep. But I did. We made it, and then tomorrow I'm doing a pup cup event, and

Brandon 1:14:22

oh, where's this one gonna be? Oh,

Collin 1:14:24

well, this one is just at an apartment complex. Oh,

Brandon 1:14:28

okay, okay. Yeah, I don't know if it was like at a like a

Collin 1:14:30

park or thing, like a dog doggy dive. No, no, this one was one we were asked to come out and do something because they're they're doing something already at their complex, and so they wanted us to come out and do it. I'm like, sure, fine, okay, whatever. Got some leftover. Yeah, put thaw it

Brandon 1:14:48

out this time, Collin.

Collin 1:14:49

I know. Okay, and so yeah, so we'll we are and and this weekend in my other location. We're doing another an event that I'm not being part of, so that feels good. I'm happy doing that. We were asked to be there, and I was like, "Hold up, hold up, hold on! And I went to the team, and I was like, "Hey, is anyone running low on hours and would like? I need one person. I need one, only one, and is available this day, this day, and I got my volunteer or my person who signed up for it. I was like, great. Then I responded to the person, the email. I was like, we will be there. We will be there. I will not.

Brandon 1:15:36

I mean, we, the royal we, the company. This is this is

Collin 1:15:42

by far and away the single thing that I have found that gets a good team is the more members who understand the we language, yeah, the the the better everything runs, and so we're working on that. But we will be there at an event that I will be many hours from, and I'm very thankful for.

Brandon 1:16:06

You'll be there in spirit.

Collin 1:16:08

I will be there in as much as I pay for that darn logo. Yeah, in brand

Brandon 1:16:13

logo, you'll be there, which is the most important, right? Like I know you're the face and everything, but like the logo will be there, the brand will be there. Yeah, so that's good, right? Like,

Collin 1:16:30

oh my goodness! So, yes, that's been that's just been my week. That's all we've

Speaker 1 1:16:39

done. I like it. Yeah, nice.

Speaker 2 1:16:40

Yep,

Brandon 1:16:41

nice.

Collin 1:16:41

Yep,

Brandon 1:16:42

nice. Well, I'll round us out. I forgot, though. Collin, returning segment time. I do have an entry in things I heard in sixth grade. I even I even

Collin 1:16:54

pre-wrote out this on my document so that I did wouldn't miss it. Yeah,

Brandon 1:16:59

I almost forgot here. This is a doozy, all right. Hold on to your hats. Okay. Here we go. Things that I heard in sixth grade. This tiny spoon will lead me to victory.

Collin 1:17:31

Was it said? Was it said like this tiny spoon will leave you, or was it more like a like a quiet moment from the person? No, no, it was like

Brandon 1:17:40

literally, she was like, "This tiny spoon will lead me to victory. Like it was like, like yes, yes, like awesome. It was boldly stated out loud. Like, oh my gosh, we were just doing, we were just trying to do some stuff in our RTI class this week to round it up because I have have some scheduling nightmare I'm trying to deal with. So I was we'll talk about that later. But like I was trying to do like a review. So we were playing a little review game, right? About just kind of the stuff that we talked about the day or two before, you know, or the couple previous days. Just you know, just prat. It's like review stuff. We're talking about like character traits and things like that. So I was like, and so we were just doing a little review game, and she was eating spaghetti. She was eating cold spaghetti from her. She was like, "Can I eat my spaghetti? And I was like, "Why did you not eat that at lunch? We just had lunch. What do you do? Okay, sure, sure. Anyway, and she, I was like, "Do you? And for she didn't. She only had a spoon, like a plastic spoon, and I was like, "Whatever, I don't care. And so she was eating her spaghetti with a spoon, which already kind of hilarious. Yeah, and she was like, she was behind a little bit in the game, and so she was rallying, and the spoon was like her good luck trophy thing, right? She was like, "This spoon and me are gonna win.

Speaker 2 1:19:16

Like this, this one was happening. She was like, "This spoon is gonna help me win the game. So I

Speaker 3 1:19:30

okay,

Speaker 4 1:19:31

but like,

Collin 1:19:33

oh my goodness,

Brandon 1:19:37

this came out of nowhere.

Collin 1:19:39

That's wild. Just ready to go. Just going for it, you know. Hey, I love it. Yeah, just going for it. That's great.

Brandon 1:19:49

Throwing it all out there. So yeah, there we go. This tiny spoon will lead me to victory. Yeah, yeah. Beautiful, beautiful quote. Right, beautiful.

Collin 1:20:00

All right, no. All

Brandon 1:20:04

right, so there we go. There was that. I didn't want to miss that because man, it's going. Okay. So I also now, of course, have the haiku to close this out. If you're ready,

Collin 1:20:16

I I am.

Brandon 1:20:17

All right. I did not write it about PD day because I don't want my IQ to be dour.

Collin 1:20:27

Okay, yes.

Brandon 1:20:31

Sun scorched hill and dale, echoing with ragged breath and 1000s of steps.

Collin 1:20:39

Oh, I really like that a lot. Yes. Oh my goodness. That's perfect. There

Brandon 1:20:54

you go. I thought I was okay. I was like, oh yeah. It's like, how do I capture how horrible it was to just even stand out. I was standing in the shade.

Speaker 1 1:21:02

Yeah, there was.

Brandon 1:21:04

It was also one of those things where, like, there was a breeze, but it was from the south, and it was really hot breeze. It was not a good. It's not better. No, this is actually

Speaker 2 1:21:12

worse.

Collin 1:21:12

No, no. Whenever it's just a hot, you know, it's a hair dryer just blasting you in the face. It's like, yeah, that's what a no, no good. Yeah, there, there

Brandon 1:21:23

was no like. At least there's a breeze. I'm like, I think the breeze is worse. Like, yeah, like I, I think it's actually hating myself. Breeze,

Collin 1:21:30

yeah, this is not fun. Yeah,

Brandon 1:21:32

yeah. Can we, can we lose the breeze? Let's get my arms out.

Collin 1:21:36

Oh dear God! Well, I'm glad you survived, and I'm glad everyone glad we all survived this week. That's what I learned. Yeah, we all we all did survive. The next

Brandon 1:21:50

week it might be below 90. Holy man! Fingers crossed! Fingers crossed! Here we go!

Collin 1:21:57

Fingers crossed! This is working on

Brandon 1:21:58

tapping on a wood there. Got

Collin 1:22:01

it. That's what we do, and so. so let's just stay tuned for the updated weather report. See how see how we do. If we survive. If we survive, yes. Well, with that, we'll we'll end, and we will see. We will see what happens with the weather?

Speaker 1 1:22:21

All right.

Collin 1:22:21

Okay. Love you.

Speaker 1 1:22:23

Love you too.

Collin 1:22:24

Bye. Bye.
